who are united to us by the ties of kindred and friendship, as he remembered his mother and the disciple whom he loved, may we, like him, think compassionately of those who know not what they do; and when Thou sendest to us Thine angel of death, may we likewise with filial trust commit our spirits into Thy hands. Now and ever, O God, Thou wilt shelter us and provide for us. We cannot doubt that Thou, who hast given us Jesus Christ, wilt give us all things that are good for us.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

MORNING OR EVENING OF EASTER DAY.

LESSED BE THOU, O Lord God, for all

Thy goodness and loving-kindness; but we would especially praise and adore Thee this day as the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to Thine abundant mercy hast begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved for us in Heaven. May that day of the week, which celebrates our Saviour's victory over the grave, always be to us a day of refreshing by means of his sacred presence in our thoughts and hearts; but still more on this day, the day of the year on which his glorious rising is commemorated, may we delight to meditate on his exaltation at Thy right hand, and the transcendent prospects which he has disclosed to his faithful disciples. Gracious Father, we rejoice with trembling, when we think of the blessedness which Thou hast prepared for us; for what are Thy servants, and what can they become during their short earthly pilgrimage, that they should dwell hereafter in Thy immediate presence with Thy

beloved Son, and Thy saints and angels, and be clothed with immortality and be called Thy children? Forgive our manifold sins and utter unworthiness, and do Thou, as Thou alone canst, prepare us for Thyself by breathing into us holy thoughts and affections. Shed down upon us, we beseech Thee, in ever larger measures the spirit of Jesus Christ. May we not be among those who live chiefly for the things that perish, but even now may the eternal life of the spirit begin within us. And, since Thou art the God, not of the dead but of the living, may we not unduly fear death either for ourselves or our dear friends, but having made it our first care to do Thy will on earth, and humbly casting ourselves on Thy fatherly mercy, may we look peacefully forward to passing through the grave and gate of death to our joyful resurrection, through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against

us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: for Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

How can we ever sufficiently thank Thee for Thy beloved Son to lead us to show us how we may become well-pleasing in Thy sight! O may his spirit be amidst us at this time! GENERAL PRAYER.

|VER-BLESSED GOD! who by reason of Thine infinite wisdom and greatness art farthest of all from us, but who by reason of Thine infinite goodness and love art nearest of all to us! We offer up to Thee our fervent adoration; we thank Thee for Thy gracious gifts to us, which in number and excellence are far beyond our comprehension, and we pray that Thou wilt continue to supply both our bodily and our spiritual wants out of the stores of Thy bounty. We know not how to speak to Thee

as we could wish; Thou art in Heaven, we are on Earth. Thou the Eternal, the All-perfect hast permitted us who are only of yesterday to bow before Thee with our imperfections, and call Thee Father. We would ever draw
