sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any enter in, he shall be safe, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. The thief cometh not, but to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that the sheep may have life, and that they may have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd layeth down his life for the sheep. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to receive it again”. # See Wakefield. To lay down life was a voluntary act to which Jesus submitted in full confidence that it would be speedily restored to him. The common version, which the primate here adopts, is, “I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again:” which seems to imply that our Lord's resurrection was the effect of his own power, a sense which the words in the original do not convey, and which is directly contrary to the most explicit declarations of the scriptures. Acts i. 24; iii. 15; xvii. 31; Rom. vi. 4; 1 Cor. xv. 15.

Ch. xi. Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Be
thany, the town of Mary and of her sister Martha. (Now it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with balsam +, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) His sisters therefore sent to Jesus, saying, “ Master, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.” And when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not unto death; but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified by it.” (Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.) When he heard therefore that Lazarus was sick, he still abode two days in the place where he was. Then afterward he saith to his disciples, “Let us go again into Judea.” His disciples say unto him, “Master, but now the Jews sought to stone thee: and goest thou thither again * Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of the day 2 If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world: but if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth ; because the light is not in him ...” He spake these things; and afterward he saith unto them, “Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him.” Then his disciples said, “Master, if he sleep, he will recover.” But

Jesus spake of his death : yet they thought that he was 14 speaking of rest in sleep. Then Jesus said to them plainly, 15 “Lazarus is dead. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, that ye may believe: but let us go to him.” 16 Then Thomas, who is called Didymus, said to his fellowdisciples, “Let us also go, that we may die with him.” 17 When Jesus therefore came, he found that Lazarus had 18 already lain four days in the sepulchre. (Now Bethany 19 was near Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off: and many of the Jews had come * to Martha and Mary, that they 20 might comfort them concerning their brother.) « Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him, Master, by this time the
smell is offensive *: for he hath been buried four days. 40 Jesus saith unto her, “ Said I not unto thee that, if thou
wouldest believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God ?" 41 Then they took away the stonet. And Jesus lifted up
his eyes, and said, “ Father, I thank thee that thou 42 hast heard me. I know indeed that thou hearest me
always: but because of the multitude who stand by I
have said this, that they may believe that thou hast sent 43 me.” And when he had said these words, he cried out 44 with a loud voice, “ Lazarus, come forth.” [And] he
that had been dead came out, having his hands and feet bound with grave-clothes : and his face was bound about
with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, “ Loose him, 45 and let him go.” Then many of the Jews who had come
to Mary, and had seen the things which [Jesus] did, be46 lieved in him. But some of them went away to the
Pharisees, and told them what things Jesus had done. 47 The chief-priests therefore and the Pharisees assembled
