Chap. xxi. Deftruction of the temple foretold. 811 44 David therefore calleth him Lord, How is he then his fon

eft rightly, neither accepteft thou the perfon of any, but teachest the way of God truly:

28 Saying, Mafter, Mofes wrote unto us, If any man's brother die, having a wife, and he die without children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up feed unto his brother.

9 There were therefore feven brethren; and the first took a wife, and died without children.

30 And the fecond took her to wife, and he died childless.

31 And the third took her; and in like manner the feven alfo; and they left no children, and died.

32 Laft of all the woman died alfo. 35 Therefore in the refurrection, Whofe wife of them is the? For seven had her to wife.

84 And Jefus anfwering, faid unto them, The children of this world marry, and are given in marriage;

CHAP. XXI.

5 The deftruction of the temple and city is foretold. 25 The figns of the last day. AND he looked up, and faw the rich men cafting their gifts into the treasury. 2 And he faw alfo a certain poor widow cafting in thither two mites.

3 And he faid, Of a truth I fay unto you, that this poor widow hath caft in more than they all:

For all these have of their abundance caft in unto the offerings of God: but the of her penury hath caft in all the living that he had.

5 And as fome fpake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly ftones and gifts, he said,

6 As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there fhall not be left one ftone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

7 And they asked him, faying, Master, But when hall these things be? and, What fign will there be when theíe things thall come to pass?

8 And he faid, Take heed that ye be not deceived for many hall come in my name, faying, I am Chrift; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them.

55 But they which thall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the 9 But when ye shall hear of wars and refurrection from the dead, neither mar-commotions, be not terrified: for thefe things must first come to pafs; but the end is not by and by.

812 Signs of the last day.

St. LUKE.

16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kinsfolks, and friends and fome of you shall they cause to be put to death.

17 And ye fhall be hated of all men for my name's fake.

18 But there fhall not an hair of your head perish.

19 In your patience poffefs ye your fouls.

20 And when ye fhall fee Jerufalem compaffed with armies, then know that the defolation thereof is nigh.

21 Then let them which are in Judea. flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midft of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

22 For these be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

23 But woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck,in those days! for there fhall be great diftrefs in the land, and wrath upon this people.

24 And they shall fall by the edge of the fword, and shall be led away captive into all nations and Jerufalem fhall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

NOW the feaft of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the paffover.

And the chief priests and scribes fought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

3 Then entered Satan into Judas, furnamed Ifcariot, being of the number of the twelve.

And he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

6 And he promised, and fought opportunity to betray him unto them in the abfence of the multitude.

7¶Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the paffover must be killed. 8 And he fent Peter and John, faying,

23¶And there fhall be figns in the fun, and in the moon, and in the ftars; and upon the earth diftrefs of nations, with per-Go and prepare us the passover, that we plexity; the fea and the waves roaring; may eat. 26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after thole things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.

27 And then fhall they fee the Son of Man coming in a cloud, with power and great glory.

28 And when these things begin to come to pafs, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh. 29 And he fpake to them a parable; Behold the fig tree, and all the trees;

30 When they now fhoot forth, ye fee and know of your own felves that fummer is now nigh at hand.

81 So likewife ye, when ye fee thefe things come to pafs, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

32 Verily I fay unto you, This generation ball not pafs away till all be fulfilled. 33 Heaven and earth shall pafs away but my word thall not pafs away.

34 Ánd take heed to yourfelves, left at any time your hearts be overcharged with furfeiting and drunkennefs, and cares of this life, and fo that day come upon you unawares.

85 For as a fnare fhall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

36 Watchye therefore,and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to ef

9 And they faid unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

10 And he faid unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there fhall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.

11 And ye shall fay unto the good man of the houfe, The mafter faith unto thee, Where is the guest chamber, where I hall eat the pallover with my difciples?

12 And he shall hew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

13 And they went, and found as he had faid unto them and they made ready the paffover.

14 And when the hour was come, he fat down, and the twelve apofiles with him.

15 And he faid unto them, With defire 1 have defired to cat this paffover with you before I fuffer:

16 For I fay unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and faid, Take this, and divide it among yourfelves:

18 For I fay unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake ir, and gave unto them, faying,

faying, This is my body which is given 40 And when he was at the place, he for you: this do in remembrance of me.faid unto them, Pray that ye enter not 20 Likewife alfo the cup after fupper, into temptation. faying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood, which is thed for you.

21 But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table. 22 And truly the Son of Man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

23 And they began to inquire arnong themselves, which of them it was that: hould do this thing.

41 And he was withdrawn from them about a flone's caft, and kneeled down, and prayed,

42 Saying, Father, If thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done.

48 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, ftrengthening him. 44 And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly and his fweat was as it 24 And there was also a ftrife among were great drops of blood falling down them, which of them should be account-to the ground. ed the greatest.

25 And he faid unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercife lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them, are called benefactors.

45 And when he rofe up from prayer, and was come to his difciples, he found them fleeping for forrow,

46 And faid unto them, Why fleep ye Rife and pray, left ye enter into temptation.

47 And while he yet fpake, behold, a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and 27 For whether is greater, he that fit-drew near unto Jefus to kifs him. teth at meat, or he that ferveth? Is not he that fitteth at meat? But I am among you as he that ferveth.

28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations:

29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and it on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Ifrael.

31 And the Lord faid, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath defired to bave you, that he may fift you as wheat :

48 But Jefus faid unto him, Judas, Betrayelt thou the Son of Man with a kifs?

49 When they which were about him faw what would follow, they faid unto him, Lord, Shall we fmite with the sword?

50 And one of them fmote the fervant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear,

51 And Jefus anfwered and faid, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

52 Then Jefus faid unto the chief priefs, and captains of the temple, and the elders which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with

32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art con-fwords and staves ì verted, firengthen thy brethren.

85 And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

84 And he faid, I tell thee, Peter, the cock fhall not crow this day, before that thou fhalt thrice deny that thou knoweft me.

35 And he faid unto them, When I fent you without purfe, and fcrip, and thoes, Lacked ye any thing? And they faid, Nothing.

36 Then faid he unto them, But now, he that hath a purfe, let him take it, and likewife bis fcrip: and he that hath no fword, let him fell his garment, and buy one.

37 For I fay unto you, That this that is written must yet be accomplished in nie, And he was reckoned among the tranfgreffors: for the things concerning me have an end.

S And they faid, Lord. behold, here are two fwords. And he faid unto them, It is enough.

59 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his difciples alfo followed him.

55 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye ftretched forth no hands again me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's houfe. And Peter followed afar off.

55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were fet down together, Peter fat down among them.

56 But a certain maid beheld him as he fat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and faid, This man was also with him.

57 And he denied him, faying, Woman, I know him not.

58 And after a little while another faw him, and faid, Thou art alfo of them. And Peter faid, Man, I am not.

59 And about the fpace of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, faying, Of a truth this fellow alfo was with him: for he is a Galilean.

60 And Peter faid, Man, I know not what thou fayeft. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

811 Chrift accused before Pilate.

St. LUKE. Pilate is defirous to release bim.

61 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Feter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had faid unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

9 Then he questioned with him in many words; but he anfwered him nothing. 10 And the chief priests and fcribes flood, and vehemently accufed him.

11 And Herod with his men of war fet him at nought, and mocked bim, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and fent

63 And the men that held Jefus mock-him again to Pilate. ed him, and fmote bim.

64 And when they had blindfolded him, they truck him on the face, and afked him, faying, Prophefy, Who is it that fmote thee?

12 And the fame day Pilate and Herod were made friends together; for before they were at enmity between themselves. 13 And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers, and the people,

65 And many other things blafphemoufly fpake they against him. 14 Said unto them, Ye have brought 66 And as foon as it was day, the el-this man unto me, as one that perverteth ders of the people and the chief priests the people: and, behold, I, having exand the scribes came together, and led amined him before you, have found no him into their council, faying, fault in this man touching thofe things whereof ye accufe him :

68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.

69 Hereafter thall the Son of Man fit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then faid they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he faid unto them, Ye fay that I am.

71 And they faid, Why need we any further witnels? For we ourfelves have heard of his own mouth.

15 No, nor yet Herod: for I fent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

16 I will therefore chaftife him, and release bim.

17 (For of neceffity he must release one unto them at the feaft.)

18 And they cried out all at once, faying, Away with this man, and releale unto us Barabbas :

19 (Who for a certain fedition, made in the city, and for murder, was caft into prifon.)

CHAP. XXIII. Jefus is accused before Pilate, 18 is defirous to release him. 27 The Aruction of Jerufalem foretold. Chrift's death, 50 and burial. AND the whole multitude of them arofe, and led Irim unto Pilate.

2 And they began to accufe him, faying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give trib. ute to Cefar, faying that he himself is Chrift a king.

3 And Pilate afked him, faying, Art thou the king of the Jews? And he an fwered him and faid, Thou fayest it.

4 Then faid Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this

man.

5 And they were the more fierce, fay ing, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

6 When Plate heard of Galilee, he afked whether the man were a Galilean. 7 And as foon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod's jurifdiction, he fent him to Herod, who himself alfo was at Jerufalem at that time.

8 And when Herod faw Jefus, he was exceeding glad for he was defirous to fee him of a long feafon, becaufe he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have feen fome miracle done by

him.

21 But they cried, faying, Crucify him, crucify him.

22 And he faid unto them, the third time, Why, What evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in hun: I will therefore chaftife him, and let him go.

23 And they were inftant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priefis prevailed.

24 And Pilate gave fentence that it fhould be as they required.

25 And he releafed unto them him that for fedition and murder was caft into prifon, whom they had defired; but he delivered Jefus to their will.

26 And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the crofs,that he might bear it after fetus.

27 And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which alfo bewailed and lamented him.

28 But Jefus turning unto them, said, Daughters of Jerufalem, weep not let me, but weep for yourfelves, and for your children.

29 For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they hall fay, Bleffed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave fuck.

His refurre&ion. 815 himself waited for the kingdom of God. 52 This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jefus.

53 And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a fepulchre that hewn in ftone, wherein never man before was laid.

54 And that day was the preparation, and the fabbath drew on.

S1 For if they do thefe things in a green tree, What thall be done in the dry? 32 And there were alfo two others, mal-was efactors, led with him to be put to death SS And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left. 34 Then faid Jefus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment,and caft lots. 35 And the people ftood beholding. And the rulers alfo with them derided bim, faying, He faved others; let him fave himfelf, if he be Chrift the chofen of God.

36 And the foldiers alfo mocked him, `coming to him, and offering him vinegar, 87 And faying, If thou be the king of the Jews, fave thyfelf.

38 And a fuperfcription alfo was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

$9 And one of the malefactors, which were hanged, railed on him, faying, If thou be Chrift, fave thy felf and us.

55 And the women alfo, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the fepulchre, and how his body was laid.

36 And they returned, and prepared fpices and ointments; and refted the fabbath day according to the commandment.

CHAP. XXIV.

Chrift's refurrection declared to the women. 13 He bimfelf appeareth, 35 giveth a charge to the apostles, 50 and afcendeth.

NOW upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the fepulchre, bringing the fpices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

2 And they found the tone rolled away from the fepulchre..

40 But the other anfwering, rebuked him, faying, Doft not thou fear God, fee-the ing thou art in the fame condemnation ? 41 And we indeed juftly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amifs.

And they entered in, and found not body of the Lord Jefus.

4 And it came to pafs, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men ftood by them in thining garments:

5 And as they were afraid, and bowed re-down their faces to the earth, they faid unto them, Why feek ye the living among the dead?

42 And he faid unto Jefus, Lord, member me when thou comeft into thy kingdom.

43 And Jefus faid unto him, Verily I fay unto thee, Today fhalt thou be with me in paradife.

44 And it was about the fixth hour, and there was darknefs over all the earth until the ninth hour.

45 And the fun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. 46 And when Jefus had cried with a loud voice, he faid, Father, into thy hands I commend my fpirit and having faid thus, he gave up the ghoft.

6 He is not here, but is rifen: remember how he fpake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

Saying, the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of finful men, and be crucified, and the third day rife again.

8 And they remembered his words,

9 And returned from the fepulchre, and told all thefe things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

10 It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and 47 Now when the centurion faw what other women that were with them, which was done, he glorified God, faying, Cer-told thefe things unto the apoitles. tainly this was a righteous man.

43 And all the people that came to gether to that fight, beholding the things which were done, Imote their breafts, and returned.

49 And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, ftood afar off, beholding these things.

50 And, behold, ibere was a man named Jofeph, a counfellor; and be was a good man, and a just :

51 The fame had not confented to the counfel and deed of them; he was of Arimathea, a city of the Jews; who alfo

11 And their words feemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

12 Then arofe Peter, and ran unto the fepulchre; and tooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pals.

15 And, behold, two of them went that fame day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerufalem about threefcore furlongs.

14 And they talked together of all thefe things which had happened.
