None juftified by the law.

Chap. iv. Abraham, father of believers. 871

Why yet am I alfo judged as a finner ? 8 And not rather (as we be flanderously reported, and as fome affirm that we fay) Let us do evil, that good may come; whofe damnation is juft.

9 What then? Are we better than they? | No, in no wife : for we have before prov. ed both Jews and Gentiles, that they are all under fin;

10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one :

There is none that understandeth, there is none that feeketh after God.

30 Seeing it is one God which fhall justify the circumcifion by faith, and uncircumcifion through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith God forbid: yea, we establish the law. CHAP. IV.

1 Abraham's faith was imputed to bim for righteoufnefs; 24 and jo shall ours. WHAT hall we then fay that Abraham our father as pertaining to the flesh, hath found ?

2 Fer if Abraham were juftified by works, he hath thereof to glory; but not before God.

12 Then are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. 5 For, What faith the fcripture? Abra13 Their throat is an open fepulchre; ham believed God, and it was counted with their tongues they have ufed deceit;uato him for righteousness. the poifon of afps is under their lips :

14 Whole mouth as full of curfing and bitterness:

15 Their feet are fwift to fhed blood: 16 Deftruction and mifery are in their ways:

17 And the way of peace have they not known:

18 There is no fear of God before

their eyes.

19 Now we know that what things foever the law faith, it faith to them who are under the law that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

:

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there (hall no flesh be juftified in his fight; for by the law is the knowledge of fin. 21 But now the righteoufnels of God without the law is manifefted, being witneffed by the law and the prophets;

22 Even the righteoufnefs of God which is by faith of Jefus Chrift unto all, and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference :

23 For all have finned and come short of the glory of God;

24 Being juftified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Chrift Jefus:

25 Whom God hath fet forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the re miffion of fins that are paft, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, fay, at this time his righteoufnefs that he might be jut, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jefus.

27 Where is boating then? It is excluded. By what law? Of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is juftined by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 Is be the God of the Jews only? Is be not alfo of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles alfo :

Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

5 But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that juftifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteoufnels.

6 Even as David alfo defcribeth the bleffedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteoufnefs without works,

Saying, Bieffed arethey whose iniquities are forgiven, and whofe fins are covered. 8 Bleed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute fin.

9 Cometh this bleffed nefs then upon the circumcifion only, or upon the uncircumcition allo? For we fay that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousnels.

10 How was it then reckoned? When he was in circumcifion, or in uncircumcifion? Not in circumcifion, but in uncircumcifion.

11 And he received the fign of circum cifion, a feal of the righteoufness of the faith which be bad, ser being uncircumcifed; that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcifed; that righteousness might be imputed unto them alfo :

12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcifion only, but who alfo walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being per uncircumcifed.

13 For the promife, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his feed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promife made of none effect :

15 Because the law worketh wrath for where no law is, there is no tranfgreflion.

16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be fure to all the feed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that allo which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

7 For fcarcely for a righteous man will one die yet peradventure for a good man tome would even dare to die.

21 That as fin hath reigned unto death, even fo might grace reign through righteoufnefs unto eternal life by Jefus Chrift our Lord.

CHAP. VI.

We must not live in fin, 12 nor let fin reign in us. 23 Death is the wages of fin. WHAT fhall we fay then? Shall we continue in fin, that grace may abound ?

God forbid. How fhall we, that are dead to fin, live any longer therein?

3 Know ye not, that fo many of us as to-were baptized into Jefus Chrift, were baptized into his death?

8 But God commendeth his love ward us, in that, while we were yet finners, Chrift died for us.

9 Much more then, being now juftified by his blood, we thall be faved from wrath through him.

10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be faved by his life.

A Therefore we are buried with him by baptifm into death; that like as Chrift was railed up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even fo we also thould walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been planted together in the likenefs of his death, we shall be alfo in the likeness of bis refurrection: 11 And not only fo, but we alfo joy in 6 Knowing this, that our old man is God through our Lord Jefus Christ, by crucified with bim, that the body of fin whom we have now received the atone-might be deftroyed, that henceforth we should not ferve fin.

:

9 Knowing that Chrift being raifed from the dead, dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him.

10 For in that he died, he died unto fin once but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God.

11 Likewife reckon ye alfo yourselves to be dead indeed unto fin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

12 Let not in therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lufts thereof.

13 Neither yield ye your members as inftruments of unrighteoufnefs unto fin: but yield yourselves unto God, as thofe that are alive from the dead, and your members as inftruments of righteoufnefs unto God.

14 For fin shall not have dominion over you for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

15 What then? Shall we fin, becaufe we are not under the law, but under grace God forbid.

3 So then if, while her husband liveth, he be married to another man, the shall be called an adulterefs: but if her hufband be dead, fhe is free from that law; fo that he is no adulterefs, though the be married to another man.

▲ Wherefore, my brethren, ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Chrift; that ye fhould be married to another, even to him who is raised from the dead, that we should bring forth fruit unto God.

5 For when we were in the flesh, the motions of fins, which were by the law, did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death:

6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should ferve in newnefs of fpirit, and not in the oldnefs of the letter.

7 What fhall we fay then? Is the law fin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known fin, but by the law: for I had not known luft, except the law had faid, Thou shalt not covet.

16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves fervants to obey, his 8 But fin, taking occafion by the comfervants ye are to whom ye obey; wheth-mandment, wrought in me all manner of er of fin unto death, or of obedience unto concupifcence. For without the law fin righteousness. was dead.

17 But God be thanked that ye were the fervants of fin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.

9 For I was alive without the law once : but when the commandment came, fin revived, and I died.

10 And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. 11 For fin, taking occafion by the com

20 For when ye were the fervants of fin, ye were free from righteousness.

21 What fruit had ye then in thofe things whereof ye are now afhamed? For the end of thofe things is death.

12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and juft, and good. 13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But fin, that it might appear fin, working death in me by that which is good; that fin by the commandment might become exceeding finful.

23 For the wages of fin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jefus Chrift our Lord. CHAP. VII.

16 If then I do that which I would not, I confent unto the law that it is good. 17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but fin that dwelleth in me.

18 For I know that in me, that is in 1 No law bath power over a man longer my flesh, dwelleth no good thing: for to than be liveth. 7 The law is not jin,will is prefent with me; but how to per12 but boly, juft, and good. form that which is good, I find not.

VIII.

1 Who are free from condemnation. 5, 18 bat barm cometh of the flb, 6 14 and what gond of the Spirit, 17 and what of being God's children.

THERE is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Chrift lefus, who walk not after the flesh, but after

the Spirit.

2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Chrift Jefus hath made me free from the law of fin and death.

8 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God fending his own Son in the likenefs of finful Refh, and for fin, condemned fin in the Aesh:

That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

54 For they that are after the flesh, do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit, the things of the Spirit.

6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and

peace.

7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not fubject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.

8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.

9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the fpirit, if fo be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of fin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

11 But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jefus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall alfo quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

13 For if yelive after the flesh,ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye ball live.

14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the fons of God. 15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to. fear; but ye have

16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit,that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint heirs with Chrift; if fo be that we fuffer with bim, that we may be alfo glorified together.

18 For I reckon that the fufferings of this prefent time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which thall be revealed in us.

19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the fons of God.

20 For the creature was made fubject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath fubjected the fame in hope;

21 Because the creature itself alfo fhall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now:

23 And not only they, but ourselves alfo, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, 19 wit, the redemption of our body,

24 For we are faved by hope: but hope that is feen is not hope: for what a man feeth, Why doth he yet hope for?

25 But if we hope for that we fee not, then do we with patience wait for it.

26 Likewife the Spirit alfo helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we fhould pray for as we ought; but the Spir it itself maketh interceffion for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27 And he that fearcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh interceffion for the faints according to the will of God.

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

29 For whom he did foreknow, he alfo did predeftinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren.

30 Moreover whom he did predeftinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he juftified, them he alfo glorified.

31 What hall we then fay to thefethings If God be for us, Who can be against us?

32 He that fpared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, How fhall he not with him alfo freely give us all things?

83 Who mall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that juftifieth;

34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Chrift that died, yea rather, that is rifen again, who is even at the right hand of

God,

Chap. ix. God, who alfo maketh interceffion for us. 35 Who shall feparate us from the love of Chrift? Sball tribulation, or diftrefs, or perfecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or fword?

56 As it is written, For thy take we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the flaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

38 For I am perfuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor princi. palities, nor powers, nor things prefent, nor things to come,

39 Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature shall be able to feparate us from the love of God, which is in Chrift Jefus our Lord.

16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that fheweth mercy.
