1 The rest of Chriftians is attained by faith. 12 The power of God's word. 14 By our high priest, Jelus the Son of God, fubject to infirmities, but not to fin, 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace.

LET us therefore fear, left a promife being left us of entering into his reft, any of you should seem to come short of it.

2 For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

8 For we which have believed do enter into reft, as he faid, As I have fworn in my wrath, if they shall enter into my reit: although the works were finished from the foundation of the world.

For he fpake in a certain place of the feventh day on this wife, And God did reft the feventh day from all his works. And in this place again, If they fhall enter into my rest.

6 Seeing therefore it remaineth that fome mult enter therein, and they to whom it was first preached entered not in because of unbelief,

Cbrift's priefbood.

CHAP. V.

The authority and bonour of our Saniour's priestbood. 11 Negligence in the knowledge thereof reproved.

FOR every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and facrifices for fins:

2 Who can have compaffion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself alfo is compaffed with infirmity.

3 And by reafon hereof he ought, as for the people, so alfo for himself, to offer for fins.

And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

5 So alfo Chrift glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that faid unto him, Thou art my Son, today have I begotten thee.

6 As he faith alfo in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec.

7 Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with ftrong crying and tears unto him that was able to fave him from death, 7 Again, he limiteth a certain day, fay-and was heard in that he feared; ing in David, Today, after fo long a time; as it is faid, Today, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

8 For if Jefus had given them reft, then would he not afterward have fpoken of another day.

9 There remaineth therefore a reft to the people of God.

10 For he that is entered into his reft, he alfo hath ceafed from his own works, as God did from his.

11 Let us labour therefore to enter into that reft, left any man fall after the fame example of unbelief.

12 ¶ For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and (harper than any two edged word, piercing even to the dividing alunder of foul and fpirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a difcerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13 Neither is there any creature that is not manifeft in his fight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do.

14 Seeing then that we have a great High Prieft, that is paffed into the heav ens, Jefus the Son of God, let us hold faft our profeffion.

15 For we have not an high prieft which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without fin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly into the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

8 Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he fuffered; 9 And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal falvation unto all them that obey him;

10 Called of God an high prieft after the order of Melchifedec.

11 ¶ Of whom we have many things to fay, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become fuch as have need of milk, and not of ftrong meat. 13 For every one that ufeth milk is unfkilful in the word of righteousness : for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reafon of use have their fenfes exercised to difcern both good and evil.

CHAP. VI.

1 Paul exhorteth not to fall back from the faith, 11 but to be steadfast, 12 diligent and patient to wait upon God, 15 because God is most fure in bis promife. THEREFORE leaving the principles of the doctrine of Chrift, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith towards God,

2 Of the doctrine of baptifms, and of laying on of hands, and of refurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

3 And this will we do, if God permit.

Chrift and Melchifedec. 927

4 For it is impoffible for those who part of all; first being by interpretation were once enlightened, and have tafted King of righteousness, and after that alfó of the heavenly gift, and were made par- King of Salem, which is, King of peace; takers of the Holy Ghoft,

5 And have tafted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to

come,

8 Without father, without mother, without defcent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually. 4 Now confider how great this man

6 If they fhall fall away to renew them again unto repentance; feeing they cru-was, unto whom even the patriarch Acify to themselves the Son of God afresh, braham gave a tenth of the fpoils. and put bim to an open fhame.

7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them for whom it is dreffed, receiveth blelling from God :

8 But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto curfing, whofe end is to be burned.

9 But, beloved, we are perfuaded better things of you, and things that accompany falvation, though we thus fpeak.

10 For God is not unrighteous, to forget your work and labour of love, which ye have thewed toward his name, in that ye have ministered to the saints, and do minifter.

11 ¶ And we defire that every one of you do fhew the fame diligence to the full affurance of hope unto the end:

12 That ye be not flothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

13 For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could fwear by no greater, he fware by himself,

14 Saying, Surely blefling I will blefs thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee. 15 And fo, after he had patiently endured. he obtained the promise.

5 And verily, they that are of the sons of Levi, who receive the office of the priesthood, have a commandment to take tithes of the people according to the law, that is, of their brethren, though they come out of the loins of Abraham :

6 But he whofe defcent is not counted from them, received tithes of Abraham, and blefled him that had the promises.

7 And without all contradiction the lefs is bleffed of the better.

8 And here men that die receive tithes ; but there he receiverb them, of whom it is witneffed that he liveth.

9 And as I may fo fay, Levi alfo, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham. 10 For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchifedec met him.

11 If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) What further need was there that another priest should rife after the order of Melchifedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron

12 For the priesthood being changed there is made of neceflity change alfo of the law.

18 For he of whom these things are poken pertaineth to another tribe, of which 16 For men verily fwear by the great-no man gave attendance at the altar. er; and an oath for confirmation is to 14 For it is evident that our Lord them an end of all trife. 18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impoffible for God to lie, we might have a firong confolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope fet before us :

19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the foul, both fure and fted faft, and which entereth into that within the veil,

20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest forever after the order of Melchifedec. CHAP. VII.

1 Chrift Jefus is a priest after the order of Melchifedes, 11 and fo far more excellent than the priests of Aaron's order. FOR this Melchifedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the flaughter of the kings, and bleffed him;

16 Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the pow er of an endless life.

17 For he teftifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec.

18 For there is verily a difannulling of the commandment going before for the weaknets and unprofitableness thereof.

19 For the law made nothing perfect, but the bringing in of a better hope did; by the which we draw nigh unto God.

20 And inatmuch as not without an oath be ruas made priest:

21 (For those priests were made without an oath; but this with an oath by him that faid unto him, The Lord fware and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec;) 22 By to much was Jefus made a furety

24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood. 25 Wherefore he is able alfo to fave them to the uttermoft that come unto God by him, feeing he ever liveth to make interceffion for them.

26 For fuch an high priest became us, aubo is holy, harmless, undefiled, feparate from finners, and made higher than the heavens ;

27 Who needeth not daily, as thofe high priests, to offer up facrifice, first for his own fins and then for the people's for this he did once, when he he offered up himself.

28 For the law maketh men high priests which have infiranty; but the word of the oath, which was fince the law, makeib the Son, who is confecrated for evermore. CHAP. VIII.

1 By Cbrift's eternal prieftbood the Levitical priesthood is abolished, 7 and the temporal covenant by the eternal covenant. NOW of the things which we have fpoken this is the fum: We have fuch an high priest, who is fet on the right hand of the throne of the Majefty in the heavens ;

2 A minifter of the fanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

3 For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and facrifices: wherefore it is of neceffity that this man have fomewhat alfo to offer.

4 For if he were on earth, he should not be a prieft, fecing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law:

5 Who ferve unto the example and fhadow of heavenly things, as Mofes was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle; for, See, faith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern thewed to thee in the mount. 6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent miniftry, by how much alfo he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

7¶ For if that first covenant had been faultlefs, then fhould no place have been fought for the fecond.

8 For finding fault with them, he faith, Behold the days come, faith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Ifrael and with the houfe of Judah:

laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they thall be to me a people :

11 And they hall not teach every man his neighbour,and every man his brother, faying, Know the Lord: for all hall know me, from the leaft to the greateft.

12 For I will be merciful to their unrighteoufnefs, and their fins and their iniquities will I remember no more.

13 In that he faith, A new covenant, he hath made the firft old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanith away. CHAP. IX.

1 The rites and bloody Jacrifices of the law, 11 far inferior to the blood and facrifice of Chrift.

THEN verily the first covesant had alfo ordinances of divine fervice, and a worldly fanctuary.

2 For there was a tabernacle made; the_first, wherein was the candlestick, and the table, and the fhewbread; which is called the fanctuary.

3 And after the second vail, the tabernacle which is called The Holiest of all;

4 Which had the golden cenfer, and the ark of the covenant overiaid round about with gold, wherein wasthe golden pot that had manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tables of the covenant;

5 And over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy feat; of which we cannot now fpeak particularly.

6 Now when thefe things were thus ordained, the priests went always into the firft tabernacle, accomplishing the fervice of God:

7 But into the fecond went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself and for the errors of the people:

8 The Holy Ghoft this fignifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifeft, while as the firft tabernacle was yet ftanding :

9 Which was a figure for the time then prefent, in which were offered bori gifts and facrifices, that could not make him that did the fervice perfect, as pertaining to the confcience:

10 Which flood only in meats and drinks, and divers wathings, and carnal erdinan ces, impofed on them until the time of

reformation.

9 Not according to the covenant that I 11 ¶ But Chrift being come an high made with their fathers in the day when prieft of good things to come, by a greater I took them by the hand to lead them and more perfect tabernacle, not made out of the land of Egypt: becaufe they with hands, that is to fay, not of this continued not in my covenant, and I re-building ; garded them not, faith the Lord.

12 Neither by the blood of goats and 10 For this the covenant that I will calves, but by his own blood; he entered

in once into the holy place, having ob tained eternal redemption for us.

18 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the athes of an heiter, sprinkling the unclean, fanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh,

14 How much more thall the blood of Chrift, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without fpot to God, purge your confcience from dead works to ferve the living God?

1 The weakness of the law facrifices, 10 The facrifice of Cbrift's body once offered, 14 for ever baib taken away fins. FOR the law having a thadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those facrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

2 For then, Would they not have ceaf15 And for this caufe he is the mediatored to be offered because that the worof the new teftament, that by means of thippers once purged thould have had no death, for the redemption of the tranf-more confcience of fins. greffions that were under the first testament, they which are called might re-membrance again made of fins every year. ceive the promife of eternal inheritance. 16 For where a teftament is, there must alfo of neceffity be the death of the tef

tator.

17 For a teftament is of force after men are dead: otherwife it is of no trength at all while the teftator liveth: 18 Whereupon neither the first seftament was dedicated without blood;

19 For when Mofes had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, wh water, and scarlet wool, and hyffop, and fprinkled both the book, and all the people,

20 Saying, This is the blood of the teftament which God hath enjoined unto

you.

21 Moreover, he fprinkled likewife with blood both the tabernacle, and all the veffels of the ministry.

22 And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without thedding of blood is no remiffion.

23 It was therefore neceflary that the patterns of things in the heavens fhould be purified with thefe but the heavenly things themfelves with better facrifices than these.

24 For Chrift is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itfelf, now to appear in the prefence of God for us:

25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others:

26 For then must he often have fuffered fince the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away fin by the facrifice

of himself.

27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judg

ment:

28 So Chrift was once offered to bear the fins of many; and unto them that look for him hall he appear the fecond time without fin unto falvation.

For it is not poffible that the blood of bulls and of goats fhould take away fins. 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he faith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body haft thou prepared me :

7 Then faid I, Lo, I come (in the volume of thy book it is written of me) to do thy will, O God.

8 Above, when he faid, Sacrifice and of fering and burnt offerings and offering for fin thou wouldeft not, neither hadft pleafure zberein; which are offered by the law;

9 Then faid he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the fecond.

10 By the which will we are fanctified through the offering of the body of Jefus Chrift once for all

11And every prieft flandeth daily minif tering and offering oftentimes the fame facrifices, which can never take away fins :

12 But this man, after he had offered one facrifice for fins, for ever fat down on the right hand of God;

19 From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footftool.

14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are fanctified.

15 Where of the Holy Ghoft alfo is a witnefs to us: for after that he had faid before,

16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, faith the Lord, will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;

17 And their fins and iniquities will 1 remember no more.

18 Now where remiflion of these is, there is no more offering for fin.

19 Having therefore, brethren, boldnefs to enter into the holieft by the blood of Jefus,

20 By'a new and living way, which he hath confecrated for us through the veil, that is to fay, his flesh;
