maintained by the firm of Sandström, Stranne & Co. and the Svenska Lloyd Shipping Company, both of Gothenburg. The great majority of Swedish shipping concerns, however, are engaged in tramp shipping. The principal concerns of this kind are the Tirfing Steamship Company (13 vessels of about 47,000 tons gross), the Norrköping Shipping Company (11 vessels of about 17,800 tons gross), the New Trälleborg Steamship Company (9 vessels of about 11,800 tons gross), etc. Swedish inland navigation has long been organized in an exemplary manner. Connections between the different parts of the country are maintained by steamers running in regular service; and these, like the vessels intended for purely local communication and fishing, have been developed into types of vessels both up-to-date and well adapted for their purposes. The Swedish Government has long fostered the Swedish shipping industry and supported it by grants and subsidies. The fostering care of the State for shipping also embraces the pilot and lighthouse services, which at the present time comprises about 110 pilot and 350 lighthouse stations, and about 20 lifeboat stations. Theoretical instruction to officers in the Swedish mercantile service is furnished, and certificates issued, by Government Navigation schools. This policy in conjunction with native seamanship, and the severe practical training demanded, has conduced to bring out a very efficient and well-informed body of officers.
