A department in which Sandviken has gained exceedingly satisfactory results is Special steels the manufacture of special steels for the motor car, aeroplane and allied trades. The adaptability of the works to new conditions in engineering is amply borne out by the success achieved in supplying these trades with their requirements of special materials. Cold rolled steel in strips, and Cold drawn wire

is produced for multitudinous branches of manufacturing, and is a field in which Sandviken has taken a leading place from the start. The demand from abroad for these products has shown a steady increase.

To this department belong the Sandvik Steel Belts for power transmission which have ousted ropes and leather belts in a great many places on account of their immensely greater efficiency.

Steel belts for power transmission

The Sandvik Steel Belt Conveyors are coming into more and more frequent use for the Conveyors conveyance of coal, cement, ores, concentrate, suger-beet pulp, etc. These flexible conveyor belts are very cheap and durable for such service. They consume very little power, and a further advantage is the ease with which they may be unloaded. By merely fitting a scraper device the material can be deflected from the belt at any desired point, and the scraper has no injurious effect on the belt.

Silver steel

Saws

Another large department is the one where the fluted umbrella wire, so-called >>Paragon» wire, is made. Sandviken is one of the largest producers in the world of this article.

Sandvik silver steel is characterized by very great homogeneity, no surface decarbonisation, and accuracy of dimensions. It is used by a great number of Swedish and foreign makers of fine drills, such as dentists' drills, twist drills, spindles and shafts for fine machines and instruments, etc.

Of Sandvik saws it may be said that the material available is well-nigh ideal; the cutting power being both great and lasting. As the saws, besides, are well designed and finished, the popularity they have gained in Sweden and elsewhere is easy to account for.

Manufacturers of High Grade Steels and Steel Products.

The Forsbacka Steel Works, situated near the Baltic seaport of Gefle, is of ancient Historical date. Historical records show that it was established in the beginning of the seventeenth century which makes it one of the oldest Swedish iron works. Very early in that century there was a bar-iron forge in operation, and a charter was obtained in 1651 to install still another forge. The Forsbacka works has been enlarged and improved and rebuilt from time to time in the course of its history, and is now rated as one of the most important works in Sweden for the manufacture of high grade steel and steel products. The works now comprise the following departments, viz:Blast Furnace department with 4 furnaces, roasting furnaces, etc.

Steel Works with steel furnaces for manufacture of high-quality steel, Bessemer plant with 2 converters, Martin plant with 3 open hearth steel furnaces.

Rolling Mills comprising ingot mill, medium merchant mill, universal mill, small merchant mill, tube-billet mill, and hollow drill steel mill.

Forging shops with a large number of steam and pneumatic power hammers, and forge presses.

Steel Foundry.

Machine Shop and Iron Foundry, mainly for the requirements of the works. Laboratory fitted up with the latest appliances for carrying out all kinds of tensile strength tests, metallographic, microscopic, micro-photographic, and metallurgical
