From this time onward an unbroken expansion has been going on; represented by works acquired and new enterprises started, mines and shares in ore deposits purchased, and large forests tracts added to the original vast areas. Railways and canals were built for the transportation of raw material to the works. The total area of the company's domains at present amounts to nearly 800,000 acres, or about 1,100 sq. miles.

The Uddeholms work are situated in east-central Sweden, in Wermland, a district rich in mines and forests. An excellent railway system, canals and rivers, suitable for timber logging, provide the means of conveying the raw materials to the various works.

The company's export-goods are shipped from the port of Gothenburg, in part by the company's own steamers, direct to ports of destination. The harbour of the company's works on Lake Vänern can be used by vessels of up to 2,000 tons burden during about 9 months of the year.

Electric furnace at Hagfors

Electric energy is used in all the works, obtained from the company's own power stations. The total power supply at present amounts to about 50,000 HP. There are, besides, other waterfalls not yet harnessed, forming a reserve computed to about 60,000 HP.

Hagfors Steel Works, one of the largest and most up-to-date steel works in Sweden, comprise the following departments:

2 charcoal blast furnaces and 5 electric pig iron furnaces.

2 electric furnaces for the manufacture of ferromanganese.

Wire drawing mills and a special factory for all kinds of springs for railway waggons, carriages, etc.

Storfors and Nykroppa Tube Mills and Steel Works, situated on the State railway, north of Kristinehamn, making as a speciality hot finished and cold drawn seamless tubes, comprising

The Skoghall Wood Products Establishment, one of the largest and most modern in Sweden, with sawmills, sulphite and sulphate mills, etc.

The excellence of the Uddeholm iron and steel products is due to the very pure ores used, while charcoal only is used for the smelting. The ores are mostly supplied by the company's own mines at Nordmark, Taberg and Persberg as well as by some other good mines in which the company is a large shareholder. The output of these mines totals about 100,000 tons per annum of high quality iron ore. Certain ores are also brought from the Tuolluvara ore deposits in Lapland.

Skoghall, situated on the shore of Lake Vänern near Karlstad, is the industrial centre where the company's large wood products mills are now centralized. The raw materials are supplied by the company's own forests; for the most part situated along the Klarälven river and its tributaries on which the logs are floated down to the mills.

Skoghall Sawmill. The first mill was erected there in 1855. The present mill, started in 1914, is the most modern sawmill in the country. It is electrically driven, and has, in addition to all the required auxiliary machines, 12 frames, 4 edgers and 2 planers.
