The works have their origin in a forge erected at Hallstahammar in the middle of the 17th century. In 1890 they were united with the Trångfors iron works, built in 1628. The works comprise open hearth furnaces, blooming mill, intermediate and finishing rolling mills as well as complete factory for the manufacture of steelshafts, and 4 Lancashire forges at Trångfors.

Bright-reeled finest open hearth steel. Whenever the iron or steel is to be operated on with cutting tools we recommend our bright-reeled rod steel in preference to ordinary rolled goods. The slag sheating produced in the rolling is completely removed by the bright-reeling, and in consequence the tools are not so rapidly dulled and the work can be forced at a much higher rate of speed.

Rod steel

steelshafts

The bright-turned steelshafts are absolutely round with diameters turned to accurate Bright-turned measurements. They are straightened after the turning, and are in consequence quite

true.

Besides the above enumerated products the works have been engaged since 1910 in Compressed the manufacture of turned and compressed steelshafts. The process developed on strictly scientific principles has been brought to the highest perfection. Every detail of the mechanical equipment, the selection of raw material, treatments and analyses, everything in fact, which influences the final product, is given the most critical attention to ensure a maintaining of the high quality.

In connection with the manufacture of steelshafts the works have taken up the manufacture of bright-drawn iron and steel of all sizes and sections; further machine-straightened shaft bars. These shaft bars have the advantage over ordinary rolled, hand-straightened steel of being straightened with extreme exactitude which saves labour and time involved in straightening before turning, and reduces the depth of the cut required. Export shipments are made principally over the ports of Stockholm and Gothenburg, and in the summer months also from Västerås and Köping on Lake Mälar.

The history of Iggesund goes far back. The place was selected for an industrial centre General as early as in the middle of the 16th century. The first smelter and forge was put up at Iggesund in 1685. The year 1800 initiated a new era, new ironworks being erected, mines and forests acquired, and since that time there has been a steady growth. The Iggesund works now rank among the foremost Swedish industrial undertakings. Having changed hands several times, the Iggesund works were converted into a limited company in 1876 under the present name. In 1903 the Hudiksvall sawmills were acquired, which added vast forest lands and industrial establishments to the already large Iggesund works.

Situation and shipping facilities

The iron and steel works comprise the following departments: 2 charcoal blast furnaces, 2 Bessemer converters, rolling, intermediate, finishing and special mills, 6 Lancashire hearths, steam hammers, foundry and machineshop, saw factory.

The pig iron manufactured for export is made from Dannemora and other ores extremely low in phosphorus, and is the best obtainable material for fine steelmaking. It is used by some of the most renowned manufacturers of armour-plate and guns, and for other marine and military purposes.

The Bessemer steel is made in furnaces with acid lining and Dannemora ore as raw material, in carbons from 0-50 to 1.50 %. This steel is highly appreciated and largely used especially for the manufacturing of surgical instruments, razors, tools for working chilled cast-iron, etc. Iggesund are the only works in the world which manufacture Bessemer steel from the famous Dannemora ores.

Iggesund Iron Works and Pulp mills are situated on the Gulf of Bothnia, a little south of Hudiksvall, where the short Iggesund stream flows into the sea after having formed three large waterfalls. The splendid situation in a bay with a sheltered harbour, and where large quays are built for the convenience of shipping, provides excellent shipping facilities. The Iggesund port has open water from april to december, inclusive.
