The motive power for the various shops is furnished by one water-power plant at Fin- Motive Power spong of about 1500 kw and another at Rämninge, about 11 miles from Finspong, giving approximately 1000 kw. This power, together with that from outside plants, is transformed in a sub-station at the works, whence it is distributed to the various departments. The officials and clerks live in houses belonging to the company, and the workmen are accomodated partly in dwellings which the company has built, partly in old houses which have been modernized. A dairy, butchery and flour-mill dealing in the produce from the company's own farms and that of the surrounding country provide the necessary foodstuffs, and the cooperative stores of Finspong, Finspongs Handelsförening, furnish cheap provisions. Lastly may be mentioned the installation of baths and an assembly hall for meetings and lectures.

Most important among the company's establishments are the Main Works at Västeras, which have been erected for the manufacture of semi-finished metal products on a large scale. They were built in 1898/1900 on an imposing scale for those days, and since coming into the possession of The Swedish Metal Works they have been considerably enlarged. The new shops added to the original establishment have increased the floor space in actual use, from 15,000 to more than 35,000 square metres.

Skultuna Works are the oldest of the Company's properties, founded by King Carolus IX in 1607 and remained the property of the Crown until 1715 in which year they passed by sale into private possession.

Part of the manufacture of semi-finished articles is carried on at the Granefors Works, which specialize in the production of copper sheets and tubes. These works are situated in South Sweden, near Karlshamn. The factory was founded in about 1620.

Semi-finished lead goods are manufactured at Sala Lead Smelting and Refining Works, which receives the raw material, lead concentrate, from the Kaveltorp Mines and other sources. The lead-smelting is the only part of the old historic Sala Silver Mine still in operation. The production comprises, besides the above mentioned goods of the »Salberget » brand, silver in fairly large quantities. The annual production of silver has of late years risen to 1,200 kilogrammes.

The gold contained in the concentrate is also extracted at the Sala Works, the annual production varying from about 1 to 15 kilogrammes of pure metal.

The Kaveltorp ore deposits were acquired by the Company in 1917 in order to ensure a continuous supply of raw material to the Sala Works. This deposit, which supplies zinc and lead ore, is situated in the Central Mining District of Sweden, and has been worked since the early fifties of last century.
