Historical

The Atlas Works, Stockholm, founded in 1873, have been known for many years as manufacturers of railway equipment and rolling stock, such as cars and locomotives; army vehicles, bridge superstructures, steam engines and boilers, and heating plants.

The Diesel Engine Works, situated at Sickla near Stockholm, were organised in 1898 for building Diesel engines under the original patents acquired for Sweden about that time. The works have been set apart from the start exclusively for designing and building Diesel engines, and the type evolved there has achieved great popularity from the many improvements introduced into its design. These engines are best known, especially abroad, by their registered name of »Polar» Diesel engines.

The present Company was formed in 1917 when the two foregoing works were acquired. The Company's principal establishments are the Atlas Works, Stockholm, the Diesel Engine Works at Sickla, and the Norrby Foundries at Sundbyberg, near Stockholm. Head office at Stockholm.

Compressors, Rock Drills and Pneumatic Tools

The Atlas Air Compressors are of different types and sizes, from about 0.75 to about Compressors 200 cubic metres free air per minute. The compressors are primarily designed for supplying air to compressed air tools limiting the pressure required to about 100 lbs. per sq. inch. They are built in both vertical and horizontal types, with one or more cylinders, and with single or two-stage compression; for belt drive, or geared to electric motors, directly coupled to oil engines, electric motors, or steam engines.

General information

The Atlas rock drills are designed and constructed in a great variety of types to Rock drills. suit drilling in the most varied kinds of rock. They are all, however, of the hammer type, i. e. are fitted with a striking piston. In Swedish mines, where the rock is particularly hard and intractable, the Atlas drills have ousted all the other makes formerly in use. Thence they have made their way into other European countries, and are now extensively used overseas also, especially in S. America, S. Africa, and Japan.

A notable feature of the design is its simplicity and small number of parts. Moreover, these drills are very easy to handle, making it possible to entrust them to unskilled workers. Atlas hammer drills may be used for drilling holes to depths up to 20-25 feet.

All the rock drills enumerated below are of standard pattern, spare parts being always kept in stock. As the productive capacity of the works is very great, large orders can be effectively and rapidly dealt with.

Various types

1. With air feed and without automatic rotation of the drill steel, type Cyclop, is made Rock drills. in two sizes. Designed for use in hard rock, drilling horizontal holes and also vertical holes either upwards or downwards. It may be worked with water flushing through a hollow drill, air injection through a hollow drill, or with solid, cruciform drill steels.

2. With screw feed and automatic rotation of the drill steel, type R. W. 64, for underground drilling of different kinds, especially in middling hard to hard rock where

powerful drilling machines fitted on columns are suitable.
The drills are usually arranged for wet drilling.

Rock-drill R. H. 64, with handle and automatic rotation of the drill steel

3. With handle for oscillating the drill steel by hand, types C. R. and C. H. The C. R.-type is adapted for drilling shallow holes in different directions in hard rock. The heavier drills C. H. 5 with counterweight, and C. H. 50, are intended especially for drilling holes in a downward direction in hard rock.

4. With handle and automatic rotation of the drill steel, types R. H. 64 and BOB. The R. H. 64 machine is intended for vertical downward drilling in middling hard rock, and is particularly well adapted for drilling very deep holes. The BOB type is designed for working in soft or middling hard rock.

In addition to the above described rock drills the works manufacture a wide range of tools, such as Chipping and Caulking hammers, Riveting hammers, Piston air drills, Holders-on, Sand and Concrete rammers, Sand screens, Scaling hammers, Stone-carving hammers, Geared hoists, etc.

Electric Locomotives.

Atlas Crude Oil Engines, stationary and marine types.

The Polar Diesel stationary engines are of two distinct types:

1. Low speed engines of 50-3,000 BHP ratings: Types T and BW. 2. High speed engines from 122-75 BHP, Type Z.

engines

Polar Diesel single-acting 4-cycle vertical engines in sizes from 50-550 BHP, type T, Low speed have the cylinders fitted in built-up A-frames. They are built with from one to four cylinders. The speed varies according to size from 300 to 167 r. p. m. Fuel consumption 0.402-0.413 lbs. per brake horsepower hour according to size.

Polar Diesel 4-cycle vertical engines in sizes from 740 to 1,100 BHP, Type BW. They differ from the foregoing mainly by having an enclosed box-frame for carrying the cylinders. These engines are built with four and six cylinders. Speed 167 r. p. m. Fuel consumption only 0.380 lbs. per brake horsepower hour.
