The Aktiebolaget Svensk Filmindustri (The Swedish Biograph Limited) is an amalgamation of several producing and distributing Swedish filmconcerns; the foundation was laid 1907 when the Aktiebolaget Svenska Biografteatern was organized. In 1919 a fusion with the Filmindustriaktiebolaget Skandia, itself a consolidation of the Hasselblad, Gothenburg, and the Pathé, Stockholm, concerns was effected and in the autumn of 1922 a similar amalgamation was brought about with the Skandinavisk Filmcentral. The joint capital of the concern is 35,000,000 Swed. Kronor, and Mr. Charles Magnus- Management son, popularly known as the grand old man of Swedish film » has been the managing director of the company ever since it was organized.

The company owns several large studios, equipped with all modern appliances and in every way up-to-date. The largest of the studios, popularly known as the Film City », is situated at Råsunda just outside the limits of the City of Stockholm, and has a total area of 60,000 square metres. At Långängen, also situated in the suburban districts of Stockholm, the concern has another spacious and very modern studio with an area of about 50,000 square metres, and at Hellerup, near Copenhagen, Denmark, still another

up-to-date studio has been constructed for
the company's producing in Denmark. Of
the Swedish motion picture theatres the
Filmindustri owns or has controlling interest
of about 120, among them the largest and
most modern houses in Stockholm and in
the provincial towns.

Almost from the very start the produc-
tions of the Swedish Biograph company
found a ready market all over the world
and to-day the trademark of the concern
is well known wherever film is exhibited
Quality and not the quantity has always
been the aim, and it can truly be said that
the efforts of the company's capable and
artistic directors, ably seconded by the
best known Swedish stage favourites, have
achieved for Swedish film a position of the
highest rank in the moving picture world,
willingly and even enthusiastically proclai-
med by the foremost screen critics in every
country where Swedish film has been
exhibited, and that means nearly every
country on the globe.

Victor Sjöström has shown his great artistic ability as a director in several filmversions of the distinguished authoress and recipient of the Nobel Prize, Dr. Selma Lagerlöf's stories of which »Thy soul shall bear witness >> is conceded to be a masterpiece of realism and fancy in pictures. »Love their only Law», a story from Iceland, and »Love's Crucible » must also be classified as work of a real master. Last year he produced two films, a screen version of »La maison cernée» of the French author Pierre Frondaie, featuring Meggi Albanesi, the English actress and »Men of the sea» with another English stage favourite, Matheson Lang, as leading man. Mr. Sjöström is now temporarily connected with the American Goldwyn concern where he will direct several films.

Mauritz Stiller is another of the company's able directors who has been with the con

cern almost from its start and has produced several films, much admired wherever they have been exhibited. »Snows of destiny» and »Guarded lips» have both been exceedingly well received and his last production »Snowbound», founded upon a story of Dr. Selma Lagerlöf, will no doubt be just as great a success outside of Sweden as it has been in its home country. This year he will produce at least two more films.

John Brunius of which there is a picture on next page, has also many of the company's best feature films to his credit. Last year he directed two films »>The Eyes

Artists

of Love» and >>Strong Wills», the last mention-
ed founded upon a story of the Norwegian
author Knut Hamsun, who has also been
awarded the Nobel Literary Prize. This
year he will direct a historic film and two
or three feature films.

At the Hellerup studio in Denmark Ben-
jamin Christensen has produced a film »>The
Witch», written by himself, and of great
interest as it is in many ways laid upon
different lines from everything ever made
in moving pictures.

This year many very capable men have been added to the staff of the company's directors. Of special interest is the engagement of one of the foremost film directors of the world, the young Russian genius Dimitri Buchowetzki, the producer of »Danton», »Othello» and »Peter the Great». He is to produce a film, the suggested name of which is >>Merry-go-round». It will be an international film in the true sense of the word.

The company is also producing educational films, and a very fine collection of interesting films of big game, taken by the skilful cameraman Oscar Olson during a hunting expedition of Prince William of Sweden across the African continent, has been a sensation wherever shown.

Due credit for the success of the Swedish Biograph productions must also be accorded to the fine artists who have appeared in the different plays. The concern has always taken special pains to secure the assistance of the best actresses and actors from the legitimate stage. Such prominent artists as Miss Pauline Brunius, Miss Jenny Hasselqvist, Miss Mary Johnson-Rööd, Miss Tora Teje, Messrs Ivan Hedqvist, Gösta Ekman (temporarily filling a short engagement in U. S. A.), Tore Svennberg, and the young Einar Hanson, who made a big hit with the public in Stiller's last picture, and many others now form a galaxy of screen favourites of international reputation.

Besides the above described articles the Barnängen Works produce a number of toilet and washing preparations of which the medical soaps especially have met with universal approval. The »Parba» shaving sticks and »Parba» prepared shaving creams are highly popular shaving accessories.

The Barnängen company is among the oldest manufacturers in Sweden in the chemicotechnical line. The first works were erected in 1868. The growth of the volume of business has been gratifying; and, to meet it, additions have been made from time to time. The company may now lay claim to the premier position in Sweden in this line. The company very early found a market for its products in countries outside of Sweden, and the growth has been both steady and rapid.
