Single vertical Francis Turbines erected in concrete spiral chamber. The turbine shaft is mounted in a white metal lined oil bearing placed on the cover of the guide wheel. The hydraulic pressure on the runner and the weight of the rotating parts of the turbine and generator, amounting to 260 tons, is carried by a supporting bearing placed on the top of the generator. This supporting bearing, which is of the sector type, is also supplied by Kristinehamn Works. The machinery was built in conjunction with Messrs. Nydqvist & Holm, Trollhättan, Sweden.

2 Turbines, each developing 20,500 HP. at a net head of 450 metres and 500 rpm. Vertical Pelton turbines, each with three jets on one wheel. Combined needle and deflector regulation. The turbines are shut down by means of hydraulically operated sluice valves. The axial thrust is taken by a bearing placed on the generator.

3 Turbines, each developing 4,000 HP. at a net head of 67 metres and 600 rpm. Double horizontal spiral turbines each with two suction pipe bends and singe spiral casing. Made with hydraulic thrust device, outside regulation, steel-lined guide wheel, pressure regulators and sluice valves hydraulically operated.

4 Turbines, each developing 10,000 HP. at a net head of 212 metres and 375 rpm. Pelton Turbines made with double runners and two jets on each wheel. Provided with needle and deflector regulation. The turbines are shut down by means of sluice valves hydraulically operated.

Aktiebolaget Svenska Kullagerfabriken was founded in 1907, and operations were Development commenced with a force of 12 workmen and 3 officials. The demand for the ball bear- SKF concern ings produced by the company was so great, however, that at the end of the first decade 4,000 workmen had to be employed in the works at Gothenburg alone. The share capital, set at Sw. kr. 110,000:- at the start, has been successively increased to the present figure of Sw. kr. 92,000,000:- fully paid up.

The manufacturing capacity of the works at Gothenburg is now sufficient to supply the company's world wide selling organization. The growing demand for SKF ball bearings for an infinite variety of industrial purposes, however, has made necessary the establishment of S KF factories in the most important industrial countries. Thus, SKF now possesses ball bearing factories in U. S. A., England, France, Germany, and Russia.

One of the necessary requirements for the production of a first class ball bearing Supply of is a superior raw material. Doktor Wingquist -the inventor of the self-aligning SKF ball bearing which has spread the fame of the three letters all over the world knew that in the Swedish steel he had an excellent ally, and gave the impulse to the manufacture of a grade of steel especially adapted to the manufacture of ball bearings. This steel is nowadays known as SKF steel.

SKF Works at Katrineholm

In order to secure a sufficient supply of this steel the S K F concern, already at an early date in its development, purchased one of the foremost iron and steel works in Sweden Hofors Bruk. These works control the mines which produce the world-renowned Torsåker iron ore. The products of Hofors have been well known on the world's steel markets for several centuries. Under the management of S K F, and the severe requirements set up by the S K F laboratories and factories, the Hofors steel has been further improved upon. It may now be stated without any fear of exaggeration that a steel better adapted to the manufacture of ball and roller bearings is not produced to-day.
