The company has been engaged in the manufacture of railway cars since 1857 and are the first in Sweden in this special line. Among its customers for all kinds of cars the company numbers the Governments of Sweden, Norway and Denmark as well as several private railway companies. In addition, the works produce a large range of railway hardware.

Shipbuilding has been carried on for a
very long time by the company and it has
acquired a very high reputation in this line.
The Kockum company was the first in
Sweden to build destroyers for the Swedish
Navy and has ever since built a great many
vessels of this description. They have also
built several submarines and battle ships, as
may be seen on the pictures here. The
mercantile vessels built comprise crafts of varying types and capacities.

Combined I, II & III class Sleeping Car

The shipyard was established in 1871. There are berths for vessels up to 12,000 tons and a patent slip dating from 1873 capable of receiving vessels up to 1,500 tons. Adjoining to the works two dry docks are situated and at the works disposal, of which one has recently been built, and is capable of docking vessels up to 520 feet in length.

Several of the large railway and highway bridges in Sweden have been built by the Kockums Engineering Works. Among these may specially be mentioned the electrically driven bascule-bridge in Malmö harbour having a span of 22 metres.

The origin of the works goes back to the year 1769, making it one of the oldest engineering establishments in Sweden. The works are very favourably situated at Bergsund in the Stockholm harbour district, at the entrance of the new shipway for seagoing vessels connecting Lake Mälar with the Baltic. The yards and beds of the works offer excellent facilities for ship-building and repairs of all kinds. Extensive enlargements of the shops and yards have increased the capacity of the works, enabling the concern to compete successfully both on the home and foreign markets with the best equipped ship and engine builders.

A. Shipbuilding and steam-engine department

Steel vessels of all descriptions, steam- and oil-driven;

War vessels, River and Tug boats;

Passenger and Cargo Vessels;
Ice-breakers.

Also, steam-engines, boilers, steam-winches, electric capstans, auxiliary machinery and complete line of outfit for ships.

Since their establishment the works have built over 400 vessels of all kinds. Of war vessels built at Bergsund may be mentioned several coast defence and small cruisers for the Swedish Navy. Engines and auxiliary machinery for a large number of torpedoboats have also been supplied, one of the later contracts being for a turbo-machine equipment of 6,000 HP for a mine-cruiser.

No works have a greater experience than Bergsund in building ice-breakers, of which the company have delivered a great many to harbours in Sweden as well as to for

eign countries. The powerful icebreaker »Is-
brytaren II», belonging to the City of Stock-
holm, was built and engined at Bergsund.
Other products of note in this department
are boilers, propellers, and castings for ships
and machines. A very great number of
tanks and cisterns of different description
are also manufactured in this department
up to 3,000 cub. metre capacity.

B. Bridge-building department Bridges of various kinds, both closed and for opening, such as swing, draw and roller bridges, bascule bridges, have been built and installed by the company to a number of over a thousand during the last 70 years. Most of those bridges have also been designed by the company. Other kinds of steel structures such as for buldings, roofs, sluice gates, etc. of greatly varying description have been built and installed in great numbers.
