And again departing from the coafts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the fea of Galilee, through the 32 midst of the coafts of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his fpeech: and they befeech him to put his hand 33 upon him. And he took him afide from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he fpit, 34 and touched his tongue: And looking up to heaven,

he fighed (i), and faith unto him, Ephphatha, that 35 is, Be opened. And ftraightway his ears were opened,

and the ftring of his tongue was loofed, and he 36 fpake plain. And be charged them that they should

tell no man: but the more he charged them, fo 37 much the more a great deal they publifhed it: And were beyond measure aftonished, faying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

IN thofe days the multitude being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jefus called his difciples 2 unto him, and faith unto them, I have compassion on the multitude, because they have now been with me 3 three days, and have nothing to eat: And if I fend them away fafting to their own houses, they will faint by the way: för divers of them came from far. Now the difciples had forgotten to take bread, neither had they in the fhip with thera more than 15 one loaf. And he charged them, faying, Take heed,

beware of the leaven of the (c) Pharifees, and of the 16 leaven of Herod (d). And they reafoned among them17 felves, faying, It is becaufe we have no bread. And when Jefus knew it, he faith unto them, Why reafon ye, because ye have no (e) bread? perceive ye not yet, neither understand? have ye your heart yet 18 hardened? Having eyes, fee ye not? and having 19 ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember? When

And Jefus went out, and his difciples, into the towns of Cefarea Philippi: and by the way he afked his difciples, faying unto them, Whom do 28 men say that I am? And they answered, John the

Baptift: but fome fay Elias; and others, One of 29 the prophets. And he faith unto them, But whom

fay ye that I am? And Peter anfwereth and 30 faith unto him, Thou art the Chrift. And he

charged them that they should tell no man of him. 31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests and fcribes, and be 32 killed, and after three days rife again. And he fpake that faying openly. And Peter took him, and

(f) I fee fome objects, which by their motion I fuppose are men but otherwife I could not diflinguifh them from trees.

(g) As in other miracles our Lord fhewed his power by working them inftantly, by only fpeaking a word, fo here he chofe to work one gradually, with a view perhaps to convince the beholders, that he did not effect thefe wonders by the ufe of any magical word or charm, to which, by the superstition of the times, fome might be difpofed to impute them.

33 began to rebuke him. But when he had turned about, and looked on his difciples, he rebuked Peter, faying, Get thee behind me, Satan (b): for thou favoureft not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men.

And when he had called the people unto him,. with his difciples alfo, he said unto them, Whofoever will come after me, let him deny himself (i),. 35 and take up his crofs (k), and follow me.. For whofoever will fave his life, fhall lofe it; but whosoever fhall lofe his life for my fake and the gofpel's, the 36 fame fhall fave it, For what fhall it profit a man,

if he fhall gain the whole world, and lofe. his own 37 foul? Or what fhall a man give in exchange for 38 his foul? Whofoever therefore fhall be afhamed of

me, and my words, in this adulterous' and finful generation, of him alfo fhall the Son of man be afhamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father, with the holy angels..

ND he faid unto them, Verily I fay unto you, that there be fome of them that stand here, which fhall not tafte of death, till they have feen the kingdom (a) of God come with power.

And after fix days, Jefus taketh with him Peter,.. and James, and John, and leadeth them up into an high mountain apart by themselves and he was 3 transfigured before them. And his raiment became fhining, exceeding white as fnow: fo as no fuller on

And Peter answered and faid to Jefus, Mafter, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one 6 for Mofes, and one for Elias. For he wift not 7 what to (c) fay, for they were fore afraid. And there was a cloud that overshadowed them and a voice came out of the cloud, faying, This is my 8 beloved Son: hear him. And fuddenly when they had looked round about, they saw no man any more, 9 fave Jefus only with themselves. And as they came down from the mountain, he charged them that they fhould tell no man what things they had feen, till 10 the Son of man were rifen from the dead. And they kept that faying with themselves, questioning one with another what the rifing from the dead fhould mean.

And they asked him, faying, Why fay the fcribes 12 that Elias muft first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things; and how it is written of the Son of man, that he muft fuffer many things, and be fet at nought. 13 But I fay unto you, that Elias is indeed (d) come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they lifted, as it is written of him.

And when he came to his disciples, he faw a great multitude about them, and the fcribes queftioning 15 with them. And ftraightway all the people, when they beheld him, were greatly (e) amazed, and 16 running

(b) Whatever was typified in the law, is reprefented by Mofes; whatever was foretold by the Prophets, is reprefented by Elijah; and all is accomplished in Jefus Chrift.

(c) He was overcome by the different paffions of fear and joy, and did not confider the impropriety of what he said.

(e) They were amazed, probably, on account of fome part of the glory that remained on his countenance after his transfiguration:
