If ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. -Rom. viii. 13.

Abhor that which is evil, &c. recompense to no man evil for evil, &c. be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.-Rom. xii. 9. 17. 21.

The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, &c. Let us walk honestly as in the day, not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying, &c. make not provision for the flesh to fulfil the lusts thereof.Rom. xiii. 12-14.

I would have you wise unto that which is good, but simple (or harmless) concerning evil.-Rom. xvi. 19. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God, &c. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord, &c. Flee fornication.-1 Cor. vi. 9, 10. 13. 18. Heb. xiii. 4. Eph. v. 5. 7. Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted: neither be ye idolaters, &c. neither commit fornication, &c. neither let us tempt Christ, &c. neither murmur ye, &c. Flee from idolatry. -1 Cor. x. 6-10. 14. Deut. vi. 16. Charity rejoiceth not in iniquity. -1 Cor. xiii. 6.

Awake to righteousness, and sin not, &c. The sting of death is sin. -1 Cor. xv. 34. 56.

What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what

communion hath light with darkness? -2 Cor. vi. 14.

Having these promises, &c. let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, &c.—2 Cor. vii. 1. Now I pray to God that ye do no evil.-2 Cor. xiii. 7.

Ye have been called unto liberty, only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, &c. fulfil not the lusts of the flesh, &c. aldultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like, &c. they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.-Gal. v. 13. 16. 19-21.

Be ye angry and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath, neither give place to the devil. Let him that stole, steal no more.-Eph. iv. 26-28.

Fornication, &c. let it not be once named amongst you, as becometh saints, &c. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness; but rather reprove them, &c. Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess.

Eph. v. 3. 11. 18. Col. iii. 5, 6. 8. This is the will of God, even your sanctification, &c. for God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.-1 Thess. iv. 3, 4. 7.

Abstain from all appearance of evil.-1 Thess. v. 22.

She that liveth in pleasure, is dead while she liveth, &c. Keep thyself pure.-1 Tim. v. 6. 22.

Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity: and flee also youthful lusts.-2 Tim. ii. 19. 22.

The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men; teaching us, that denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live, &c. -Titus ii. 11, 12.

Exhort one another daily, lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.-Heb. iii. 13.

If we sin wilfully after that we

have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins; but a certain fearful looking for of judgment, &c.-Heb. x. 26, 27.

Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us.-Heb. xii. 1.

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, &c. Pure religion is this, &c. to keep himself unspotted from the world.James i. 21. 27.

Whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all: for,&c.-James ii. 10, 11. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners, and purify your hearts, &c.-James iv. 8. Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, &c. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers, and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul.-1 Pet. ii. 1. 11. Eph. iv. 29-31.

He that will love life, &c. let him eschew evil, for the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.-1 Pet. iii. 10-12.

The time past may suffice us, that we have wrought the will of the Gentiles.-1 Pet. iv. 3.

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness?-2 Pet. iii. 11.

These things write I unto you, that ye sin not, &c.-1 John ii. 1.

God's Expostulations, Complaints, Threatenings, and Judgments against Sinners for their several Sins, Disobedience, and Rebellions.-Jer. xxxi. 29, 30.

It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.-Heb. x. 31. For our God is a consuming fire.— Heb. xii. 29.

God expostulates with Adam and Eve for eating of the forbidden fruit. Gen. iii. 9-13. 16-19.

Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him; and the Lord said unto Cain, &c. Now art thou cursed from the earth, &c.—Gen. iv. 8-12.

And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, &c. and it repented the Lord, that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart. And the Lord said, I will destroy man whom I have created, from the face of the earth, &c. for it repenteth me that I have made them.-Gen. vi. 5—7.

Accordingly he did destroy them by the flood.-Gen. vii. 4. 22, 23.

I will require of man the life of man. Whoso sheddeth man's blood, by man shall his blood be shed.Gen. ix. 5, 6.

Sodom and Gomorrah, because their sin was very grievous, and the cry of them waxed great before the face of the Lord, he rained upon them brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven; and he overthrew those cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, &c. Lot's wife for her disobedience in looking back, was turned into a pillar of salt. -Gen. xviii. 20. xix. 13. 24—26.

God slew Er and Onan for their wickedness.-Gen. xxxviii. 7. 10.

God met with Joseph's brethren, for their sin in selling Joseph.-Gen. xliv. 16. xlii. 21.

Many plagues and judgments, against and upon Pharaoh and the Egyptians for their sins, in not letting Israel go.-Exod. vii. viii. ix. x.. xi. xii.

God said, he would send his angel before Israel: but he would not go up, because they had sinned.-Exod. xxxiii. 2, &c.

And the Lord said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and behold it is a stiffnecked people: now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them, &c. Whosoever hath sinned against me, him will I blot out of my book, &c. I will visit their sins upon them. And the Lord plagued the people, because they made the calf.-Exod. xxxii. 9, 10.

Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things: for in all these the nations are defiled which I cast out before you: &c. therefore I do visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land itself vomiteth out her inhabitants. Ye shall not commit any of these abominations, &c. that the land spue not you out also when ye defile it, as it spued out the nations that were before you.-Levit. xviii. 2426. 28.

But if ye will not hearken unto me, &c. I will appoint over you terror, &c. And if you will not for all this hearken, &c. then will I chastise you seven times more for your sins.

The people complained (or murmured), and it displeased the Lord: and his anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned amongst them, and consumed in the uttermost parts of the camp, &c. And they fell a lusting, &c. and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat? &c. And while the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the wrath of the Lord was kindled against the people,

and the Lord smote the people with a great plague.-Numb. xi. 1. 4, 5. 20. 33.

And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses, &c. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, &c. And Miriam became leprous.Numb. xii. 1, 2. 9, 10.

The children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and said, Would God we had died in the land of Egypt, &c. Wherefore hath the Lord brought us unto this land to fall by the sword, that our wives and children should be a prey? &c. Let us make us a captain, and let us return, &c. And the Lord said, &c. How long will it be ere they believe me? &c. I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, &c. Surely they shall not see the land, &c. Your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, &c. But your little ones, which said should be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have despised, &c. Those who brought up the evil report upon the land, died of the plague, &c.-Numb. xiv. 1—4. 11, 12. 23. 29. 31, 32. 36, 37.

Korah and his company, for rebelling against Moses, and against Aaron, were swallowed up of the earth, &c. The people murmured against Moses for this: and God sent the plague amongst them.-Numb. xvi. 1-3. 30-33. 41. 45, 46.

Aaron and Moses both died, and were not suffered to enter into the land, because they rebelled against God's word at the waters of Meribah, -Numb. xx. 12. 23, 24. Deut. iii, 27. xxxii. 48-51. iv. 21, 22.

O that there were such a heart in them, that they would fear me, &c.— Deut. v. 29.

The people spake against God, and against Moses: Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt, to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. And the Lord sent fiery serpents

among the people, and they bit the people, and much people of Israel died.-Numb. xxi. 5, 6.

The people began to commit whoredom with the daughters of Moab, &c. and bowed down to their gods, &c. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, and there was a plague amongst them, whereof twenty and four thousand died.Numb. xxv. 1-3. 8, 9.

All the men that followed Baal-peor, the Lord thy God hath destroyed them.-Deut. iv. 3.

If thou do at all forget the Lord thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them; I testify against you this day, that ye shall surely perish, as the nations which the Lord destroyed before your face.-Deut. viii. 19,20. xxxi. 16-18.

For the wickedness of these nations, the Lord thy God doth drive them out, &c.-Deut. ix. 5. xviii. 9, &c.

all that he hath, because he hath transgressed, &c. And accordingly, Achan and his were stoned and burnt. Josh. vii. 1. 4, 5. 10. 12, 13. 15. 24-26.

If ye forsake the Lord, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you after that he hath done you good.-Josh. xxiv. 20. Judges ii. 13-15. x. 6. 13.

God rendered the wickedness of Abimelech, &c. in slaying his seventy brethren: and all the evil of the men of Shechem did God render upon their heads, &c.-Judges ix. 56, 57.

God said, Did not I deliver you? &c. yet have ye forsaken me, &c. wherefore I will deliver you no more. Go and cry unto the gods ye have chosen; let them deliver you, &c.— Judges x. 11—14.

Samsons's Delilah was his ruin.Judges xvi. 15-21.

The Benjamites cut off, and destroyed, for their great sin in abusing the Levite's concubine to death.— Judges i. xix. xx.

If thy brother, &c. thy daughter, or thy wife, &c. entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other God threatens Eli for his suffering gods, &c. thou shalt not spare him, his sons to sin so in the priesthood. but thou shalt surely kill him, &c.-1 Sam. ii. 22, &c. Deut. xiii. 6, &c.

If thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the Lord thy God, to observe to do all his commandments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day; all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee; cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field, &c.-Deut. xxviii. 15, &c. xxix. 19, 20. iii: 17-19.

Do ye thus requite the Lord, O foolish people and unwise? Is not he thy father? &c.-Deut. xxxii. 6. 32, &c. God's judgments upon the Philistines, while they kept the ark of God amongst them.-1 Sam. v. 6, &c.

He smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the Lord, &c. fifty thousand and threescore and ten men. - 1 Sam. vi. 19.

The elders of Israel came to Samuel, and said, Make us a king to judge us, like all the nations, &c.

And the Lord said unto Samuel, &c. They have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them, &c. And God said, Ye shall cry out because of your king, &c. and the Lord will not hear you in that day.-1 Sam. viii. 4, 5. 7. 18, 19. x. 19.

The Lord sent thunder and rain in wheat harvest; and all the people greatly feared the Lord and Samuel. We have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king, &c If ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be consumed, both ye and your king. 1 Sam. xii. 17-19. 25.

Saul offered sacrifice himself, &c. Samuel said to him, Thou hast done foolishly, &c. but now thy kingdom shall not continue.-1 Sam. xiii. 9, 10. 13, 14.

Samuel said unto Saul, Because thou hast rejected the word of the Lord, he hath also rejected thee from being king.-1 Sam. xv. 9. 11. 17. 22, 23. 26.

The Lord also took away his Spirit from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.-1 Sam. xvi. 1. 14. xix. 9.

And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets, &c. Then he goes to a familiar spirit, &c. Samuel said, Why hast thou disquieted me, &c. And Saul said, God is departed from me, and answereth me no more, &c. The Lord hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand because thou obeyedst not the voice of the Lord, nor executedst his fierce wrath upon Amalek; therefore hath the Lord done this thing unto thee this day, &c.-1 Sam. xxviii. 6, 7. 15-19. 2 Chron. x. 13, 14.

Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it, &c. and the anger of the Lord was kindled against Uzzah ; and God smote him there for his error (or rashness), and there he died, &c. Michal, David's wife, despised David for his

dancing before the ark, &c. therefore she had no child unto the day of her death, &c.-2 Sam. vi. 6-8. 16. 23.

David's sin in the matter of Uriah's wife, &c. displeased the Lord.— 2 Sam. xi. 27.

And Nathan said unto David, &c. Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, &c. and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things: wherefore hast thou despised the commandment of the Lord, to do evil in his sight? that thou hast killed Uriah, &c. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from thy house, &c. Behold, I will raise up evil against thee out of thine own house; and I will take thy wives before thine eyes, and give them unto thy neighbour, and he shall lie with thy wives in the sight of this sun, &c. The child also shall surely die, &c. And the child died.-2 Sam. xii. 7-12. 14. 18.

Then Amnon, David's son, forceth Tamar, sister of Absalom, &c. And Absalom killeth Amnon. -2 Sam. xiii. 11-14. 28, 29. Absalom conspireth against David, and rebels.-2 Sam. xv.

Absalom went in unto his father's concubines, in the sight of all Israel. -2 Sam. xvi. 21, 22.

Ahithophel's wickedness in adhering to Absalom against David; and his wicked counsels are punished, by his being rejected and given up to hang himself.-2 Sam. xvii. 1-3.23.

Absalom is slain himself.-2 Sam. xviii. 14, 15.

There was a famine, &c. And David inquired of the Lord: and the Lord answered, It is for Saul, and for his bloody house; because he slew the Gibeonites, &c. The children of Israel had sworn unto them: and Saul sought to slay them in his zeal.2 Sam. xxi. 1, 2. Josh. ix. 15.

And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel, &c. David said, Go, number ye the people, &c. So the Lord sent a pestilence upon Israel,
