The fingular mildness of the prefent winter has been generally remarked by the premature appearance of flowers, and other probloffomed and borne fruit, goofeberries were ductions of nature; apple and pear trees have plucked at Christmas, and a throstle's neft with three eggs in it was found in a garden in this county, on the 4th of January. But a ftill greater curiofity, is to be feen at Chefjoint of the city walls (by the Kaleyards) ter. A goofeberry bush, which grows in a has never failed for 20 years, to fhew its fruit it feems to be of the common kind, it may in the depth of winter, however fevere; as teach the fpeculative and curious gardener, how to plant, to procure this, and perhaps other fruit, earlier than they have hitherto ever been attempted.

In an excurfion up the country, he and his companions were feized by a party of Indians, and those who were not malfacred, were detained as flaves. In this fituation the fubject of this article was for a long period held, being repeatedly transferred from one favage chieftain to another, at the price of a few skins of wild beafts. Having endured innumerable hardships, he at length effected his escape; and after fpending fome time as a fchoolmaster in America, he returned in indigence to his native country, and was indebted for a moderate fubfiftence to the fituation he was charitably put into by the public library.-Mrs. Burton, 91.

At Pitchford, Thomas Ottley, efq. one of His Majefty's Juftices of the Peace for this county. Providence beftowed on him health and length of days; of which fingular bleffing, no one ever made a more grateful or proper ufe; for his whole life was invariably directed to every wife, and good, and laudable purpose. In his public character, he was upright, judicious, and impartial; in private life, the amiable and accomplished gentleman; polite, hospitable, and attentive to his friends; kind, confiderate, and benevolent to his tenants and dependents; humane and charitable to his indigent fellow creatures: his whole conduct was an example to thofe of high rank, and his virtues and inte grity an example to mankind. Univerially and defervedly refpected; full of years, and matured in all thofe virtues which adorn and dignify human nature, he departed this life, with that unspeakable peace which ever marks the end of the upright and juft man, at the venerable age of 90 years.

HEREFORDSHIRE.

The refult of a courfe of experiments has been laid before the Hereford Agricultural Society, by T. A. Knight, efq. from which it appears that the frength of the juice of any cider apple is in exact proportion of its weight. Thus the juices of the inferior ap ples are light when compared with the juices of the old and approved forts. The Forest Stire outweighed every other, until it was put in competition with the new variety produced by Mr. Knight, from the Siberian Crab and the Lulham Pearmain; nor could any other juice be found equal in weight to the latter.

Died] At Hereford, Mrs. Knill, wife of Thomas K, efq. mayor of this city. She was fitting alone by the fire, which caught her clothes, and burned her in fuch a dreadful manner, that the expired next morning. She was nearly 90 years of age, had been deprived of fight for feveral years, but was uncommonly cheerful in difpition-Mr. Griffiths, of the Hop Pole Inn, 53.-Mis. Knapp.-Mr. G. Smith, 57. Died.] At Oxford, in his 68th year, Sir John Treacher, knt He was elected one of the affiftants in that corporation in April, 1784, and ferved the office of Mayor in the fucceeding year. On the 29th of July, 1785, he was elected alderman in the room of the late John Nicholls, cfq. and received the honour of knighthood when His Majefty vifited that place the fame year. Having fup. Forted thefe offices with dignity to himself and credit to the city, fome years since, from I health, he refigned his alderman's gown. door, fet fire to the fame; the explosion from which was fo powerful as to force a hole thro' the ceiling, and the window out of the room above. Her father was fo feverely injured, that he furvived only a few days. A thest time before, the had nearly effected his death by adminiftering poifon to him.
