John XIV. 23. Jesus answered and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.

1 Cor. III. 6. I have planted, Apollo watered, but God gave the increase. Now he that planteth, and he that watereth, are one. And every man shall receive his own reward, accordding to his own labor.

1 Cor. VI. 9. Know you not that the unjust shall not possess the kingdom of God? Do not err; neither fornicators nor adulterers, nor idolators, nor the effeminate, not liers with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God.

2 Tim. IV. 8. As to the rest, there is laid up for me a crown of justice, which the Lord, the just judge, will render to me in that day and not only to me, but to them also that love his coming.

James II. 14. What shall it profit, my brethren, if a man say he hath faith, but hath not works? Shall faith be able to save him? And if a brother or sister be naked and want daily food, and one of you say to them: Go in peace; be thou warmed and filled; yet give them not those things that are necessary for the body what shall it profit? So faith, also, if you have not works is dead, in itself: the devils also believe and tremble. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 24. Do you see that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only? For even as the body without the spirit is dead; so also faith without works is dead.

S. Augustin, de Fide et Operibus, Cap. 15, Tom. IV,— "Why did the Lord say: If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments, and enumerate the moral precepts, if there be a possibility of arriving at life by faith alone, which is dead without works, James II. 26., without observing the command. ments; or how could what he shall say to those on his left hand be true-Go ye into eternal fire, which is prepared for the

devil and his angels; rebuking them, not because they believed not in him, but because they performed not good works ?— Hence, no man should hope for eternal life from faith alone, which is dead without works. Wherefore, he declares that he shall assemble all nations together who had promiscuously partaken of the same pastures, that their reply to him become apparent. Lord, when did we see thee suffering such and such things, and ministered not to thee? Perhaps those who had believed in him, but had not cared for good works, could come, as if by dead faith, to eternal life? or shall not they who performed no works of mercy go into eternal fire; or shall they not go into it, who have stolen their neighbor's goods; or they who by corrupting in themselves the temple of God, were unmerciful to themselves, as if works of mercy avail without charity: the Apostle saying, 1 Cor. XIII. 3., If I give all my goods to the poor, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing? For he that loveth iniquity, hateth his own soul; Ps. X. 6. Neither can it be said, as some persons erroneously imagine, that the fire is called eternal, but not the burning itself, eternal. Certainly, it is presumed that they will pass through eternal fire, to whom they promise, by reason of dead faith, salvation through fire forsooth, that the fire is eternal, but the burning, that is, the action of the fire upon them, is not eternal whereas, the Lord, foreseeing this, concludes his sentence, saying: They shall go into everlasting punishment, burning, and the just into everlasting life. Therefore, the burning is eternal as the fire is, and the Truth declares that they shall go into it, in whom faith was not wanting, but works."

Whereas, the infernal 39 Articles discard the dominion and laws of Christ Jesus over morals and temporal matters, and quench the hell-fire pronounced in the Testaments, against evil doers, and give loose reins to the brutal passions, the poor deluded Protestants may roll themselves in the rocking-chair, and repose on the pillow: they will not care for repentance, broth

erly love, good works or deservings; but they will assume the liberty of the flesh, liberty to rob, steal, cheat, and swindle, provided they can evade the temporal laws. It is to the spirit and principles of said Articles, can be traced the unnatural and horrible love and thirst of gold that seized upon all classes in England, during the sixteenth century, and that continues unabated ever since. Hordes of usurers, bankers, fund-holders, pawn-brokers, money-changers,—harpies whose touch is poison, whose harvest is public famine and pestilence, whose plough is the pen, whose rain is the ink, whose bible is the ledger, whose church is the money market, and whose God is mammon, swarmed at that period up from hell, and continue ever since in England, and in America, and wherever the 39 Articles predominate; robbing, cheating, plundering, infecting, like the Egyptian locusts, the entire community. Usury and banking which had been previously confined to the Jews and Gentiles, and which never had been tolerated, much less legalized, in any Christian country, is adopted as a lever for plundering, by the 39 Articles men.

CHAPTER X.

USURY AND BANKS ARE AGAINST THE LAW OF GOD.

Matt. V. 42. Give to him that asketh of thee, and from him that would borrow of thee, turn not away.

Luke VI. 35. If you lend to them from whom you hope to receive, what thanks have you: for sinners also lend to sinners, for to receive as much but love ye your enemies; do good, and lend, hoping for nothing thereby, and your reward will be great, and you will be the sons of the Most High.

Exod. XXII. 25. If thou lend money to any of my people, that is poor and that dwelleth with thee, thou shalt not be hard upon them, as an extortioner, nor oppress them with usury.

Levit. XXV. 35. If thy brother be weak of hand, and thou recive him as a stranger and sojourner, and he live with thee, take not usury from him, nor more than thou gavest. Thou shalt not give him thy money upon usury, nor exact of him any increase of fruits.

Deut. XXIII- 19. Thou shalt not lend to thy brother money, at usury, nor corn, nor any other thing, but to a stranger. To thy brother thou shalt lend that which he wanteth without usury.

Psalm XIV. 5. Lord, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? Or who shall rest in thy holy hill? He that hath not put out' money to usury, nor has taken bribes against the innocent.

Psalm LIV. Cast down, O Lord, and divide their tongues : for I have seen iniquity and contradiction in the city; day and night shall iniquity surround it upon its walls; and in the midst thereof are labor and injustice; and usury and deceit have not departed from its streets.

Ezech. XVIII. 8. The man that hath not lent upon usury, nor taken any increase; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord God. And the man that giveth upon usury and that taketh an increase; shall such a one live? He shall not live ; whereas he hath done all these detestable things, he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him.

Ezech. XXII. 12. They have taken gifts in thee to shed blood; thou hast taken usury and increase; and hast covetously oppressed thy neighbours; and thou hast forgotten me, saith the Lord God. Behold, I have clapped my hands at the covetousness which thou has exercised. Shall thy heart endure, or shall thy hands prevail, in the days which I will bring upon thee. I, the Lord, have spoken and I will do it; and I will disperse thee in the nations, and I will scatter thee among the countries. And her prophets have daubed them without tempering the mortar : the people of the land have used oppression and committed robbery; they have afflicted the needy and the poor. And I have poured ont my indignation upon them; in the fire of my wrath I consumed them; I have rendered their way upon their own head.

2 Esdras V. 1. There was a great cry of the people and of their wives, against their brethren, the Jews; and there were some that said: Let us mortgage our lands, and our vineyards, and our houses, and let us take corn because of the famine; and others said, Let us borrow money for the king's tribute, and let us give up our fields, and vineyards. Behold, we bring into bondage our sons, and our daughters, and some of our daughters are bond-women already; neither have we wherewith to redeem them; and our fields and our vineyards other
