LIGHTEN our darkness, we beseech thee, O

LORD; and by thy great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night. Amen.

FOR THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, from whom

cometh every good and perfect gift; send

down upon all Ministers of the gospel, and all Congregations committed to their charge, the healthful spirit of thy grace; and that they may truly please thee, pour upon them the continual dew of thy blessing. Grant this, O God, for thy great love in Jesus Christ. Amen.

FOR ALL CONDITIONS OF MEN.

GOD, the Creator and Preserver of all mankind, we humbly beseech thee for all sorts and conditions of men; that thou wouldest be pleased to make thy ways known unto them, thy saving health unto all nations. More especially we pray for the good estate of the Church Universal; that it may be so guided and governed by thy good Spirit, that all who profess and call themselves Christians may be led into the way of truth, and hold the faith in unity of spirit, in the bond of peace, and in righteousness of life. Finally, we commend to thy fatherly goodness all those who are any ways afflicted or distressed,

in mind, body, or estate; that it may please thee to comfort and relieve them according to their several necessities, giving them patience under their sufferings, and a happy issue out of all their afflictions. And this we beg for thy mercy's sake in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A GENERAL THANKSGIVING.

LMIGHTY God, Father of all mercies, we thine unworthy servants do give thee most humble and hearty thanks for all thy goodness and lovingkindness to us and to all men; we bless thee for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life; but above all, for thine inestimable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. And, we beseech thee, give us that due sense of all thy mercies, that our hearts may be unfeignedly thankful, and that we may show forth thy praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives; by giving up ourselves to thy service, and by walking before thee in holiness and righteousness all our days, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

COMMEMORATION OF THE FAITHFUL DEPARTED.

[ocr errors]

LORD most High, with thy whole Church throughout the world, we give thee thanks for all thy faithful servants who, having witnessed in their lives a good confession, have left the light

of their example to shine before thy people on earth. Mercifully grant that by thy fatherly blessing we may be enabled to follow them in all virtuous and godly living, and that hereafter we may be with them and thy glorified Son in thy heavenly presence. Amen.

CONCLUDING PRAYER.

LMIGHTY God, who hast given us grace

at this time with one accord to make our common supplications unto thee, and hast especially encouraged us by thy beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, to make known unto thee our humble requests; fulfil now, O Lord, the desires and petitions of thy servants, as may be most expedient for them; granting us in this world knowledge of thy truth, and in the world to come life everlasting. Amen.

THE

HE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us all evermore. Amen.

Or,

THE grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with

you all. Amen.

THE

Or,

HE peace of God, which passeth all understanding, keep our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Amen.

THE COMMANDMENTS.

On the Morning of Communion Day, and at such other times as he may think proper, the Minister may begin the Services by reading the Commandments, as follows:

OD spake these words, and said:

GOD

I am the Lord thy God: thou shalt have none other gods but me.

Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; and show mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain for the Lord will not hold him guiltless, that taketh his name in vain.

Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath-day. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do: but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner

of work; thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt do no murder.

Thou shalt not commit adultery.

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his servant, nor his maid, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is his.

Hear also what our Lord Jesus saith:

Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart; and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
