And nature's verdant charms recall The mildness of the soul. The sun of splendour beams; That gilds the trembling streams; O'er nature's green and teeming fields Bid flow'ry graces rise, Salute the morning skies. Along the stubborn land, And soothe the lab'ring hand. Her blooming reign extend ; Tell who the heav'nly friend. Is gentler trod below; That shuts us in from woe! Let us its Lord implore, And guide us to the door. SUMMER. Bright Summer beams along the sky, And paints the glowing year ; Her splendid tints appear! THE SACRED LYRE. And nature's verdant charms recall The mildness of the soul. The san of splendour beams; That gilds the trembling streams ; Bid flow'ry graces rise, Salute the morning skies. Along the stubborn land, And soothe the labʼring hand. Her blooming reign extend; Tell who the heav'nly friend. Is gentler trod below; , Let us its Lord implore, And guide us to the door. Then when so fit to lift the song To gratitude and heav'n, From whom those charms are giv'n? Man worships not alone; And wafts it to thy throne. The grove's sequester'd walks, And dumb creation talks. Her golden journey takes ; And animation wakes ; And bends the grateful knee New light, and life, and thee! And shuts his piercing eye; Steps up the western sky, The pious mortal rests; Within unholy breasts. If lightnings flash afar ! The elemental war. SUMMER. Bright Summer beams along the sky, And paints the glowing year; Where'er we turn the raptured eye, Her splendid tints appear! 'Tis but to him a parent's voice, That blesses while it blames; That bids unburden'd air rejoice, And life and health proclaims. Night's deepest gloom is but a calm, That sooths the wearied mind; The comfort of mankind. Smooth soft the rocks of age; And tear its blotted page: And death's dark vale I see ; But leads to heav'n and thee! AUTUMN. And waves her amber wand; Beneath her magic hand! Bright fruitfulness our plains ; And smiling glory reigns. We strike our earthly lyre; And angels form the choir. Reminds us of thy fame; grat? The blessings that from earth arise Thy gen'rous hand proclaim. Is emblem of thy love ; The peace that reigns above. And in destruction fair, And shuts the labour'd year. And smooths his wearied brow; And nature smiles below! Be open to our pray'rs! And show'r untainted airs. With innocence my guide : And leave her angel side! The beast that frisks on earth, Enjoy their short-liv'd mirth! Arrest the flutt'ring wing; That smiles and slaughter bring; In agonizing fraud, HAKK! 'twas dark Winter's sullen voice, That told the glooms that reign'd; That bad the plains no more rejoice, And all the waves be chain'd; The pallid sire is come! And ev'ry wave is dumb! The whiten'd vale below : I leave upon the snow. Man treads life's weary waste; Forgot as soon as past! The splendour of a fly; A Summer's flushing sky. Morn droops at evening's frown; And Summer, tho' so gay her eye, Tempestuous terrors crown! а |
