girt his fisher's coat unto him (for he was naked), (c) 8 and did cast himself into the lea. And the other dif

ciples came in a little ship (for they were not far from

land, but as it were two hundred cubits) dragging 9 the net with fishes. As foon then as they were come

to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid 10 thereon, and bread (d). Jefus faith unto them, Bring II of the fish which ye have now caught. Simon Peter

went up, and drew the net to land full of great fishes,

an hundred and fifty and three; and for all there 12 were so many, yet was not the net broken.' Jesus

faith unto them, Come and dine. And none of the

disciples durst ask him, Who art thou? knowing that 13 it was the Lord. Jesus then cometh and taketh 14 bread, and giveth them, and fish like wise. This is

now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his

disciples, after that he was risen from the dead. 15 So when they had dined, Jesus faith to Simon

Peter, Simon fon of Jonas, loveft thou me more than these (e)? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou

knowest that I love thee. He faith unto him, Feed 16 my lambs (f). He faith to him again the second

time, Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He faith

unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knoweft that I love thee. 17 He faith unto him, Feed my sheep (g). He faith unto

hin the third time, Simon son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved, because he said unto him

(c) The Jews were faid to be naked, when they had only their inner garment. St. Peter was impatient, and eager to go to Christ as soon as possible. (d) Miraculously provided by our blessed Lord.

the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowelt all things; thou knowest

that I love thee. Jesus faith unto him, Feed my 18 sheep (b). Verily, verily I say unto thee (i), When

thou wast young, thou girdedit thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldeft: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt ftretch forth thy hands, and another

shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest 19 not (k). This spake he, fignifying by what death he

should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, 20 he faith unto him, Follow me. Then Peter turning

about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved, follow

ing; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and 21 faid, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee (1) ? Peter

seeing him, faith to Jesus, Lord, and what fall this man do? Jesus faith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? Follow thou

Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He thall not die: but, If I will

that he tarry till I come (m), what is that to thee ? 24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things,

and wrote these things: and we know that his testi25 mony is true (n). And there are also many other

(n) It would be impossible to record every particular incident of our Saviour's life, nor is it necessary ; ihose which are here recorded being fufficient for our instruction, and being certainly and undoubtedly true, are most worthy of our entire belief.

(a) The Acts of the Apostles were written by St. Luke, and addressed to the same person to whom he had before addressed his Gospel, called here the former treatife. The prefent work contains the history of Christianity for the first thirty years after our Lord's ascension. St. Luke's design, however, was not to relate the acts of all the Apostles, but principally those only of St. Peter and St. Paul. In the first eight chapters are delivered the origin and progress of the Christian church among the Jews. From the ninth to the sixteenth is described the extenlion of it

among

the Gentiles. From the fixteenth chapter to the twentieth are contained the travels of St. Paul, including his last journey to Jerusalem; and from thence to the end of the book is an account of his various distresses, and at last his arrival and behaviour at Rome.
