ADDRESS

TO THE TEACHERS OF GRADES I. AND II.

PROVERBS XXIV. 27.

In the following Lessons the capacity of the scholars has been mainly regarded, and only such information provided as it is supposed children, of from seven to nine years old, in the First Grade, can be expected to receive: the same subject being in all its divisions expanded for those more advanced,—say, from the age of nine to twelve years, who form our Second Grade.

The Teacher is referred to The Manuals, or Guides, to the Gospel History of the Life and Ministry of our Lord, for many suggestions as to the desired mode of working the Lessons.

To some, the quantity here prepared may appear insufficient; but that it is not so, may be satisfactorily tested by questioning at the conclusion of the time allowed for teaching.

In using the book, the Teachers of each Grade will perceive that something may be got from both; the two being in such close juxta-position, advantage has been taken to economise space; intimating, by a dot in the text of the First Grade Lessons, that explanations not given in that page will be found in the Notes for the Second; and occasionally the Teacher of the Second Grade may find in the First, suggestive Explanations and Practical Reflections useful for his own class.

The importance of cultivating brisk, varied, and extensive Catechetical effort cannot be too forcibly urged. The Examination Questions here provided are purposely in advance of ordinary practice; and a more simple and initiatory series of the Teacher's own making is strongly recommended; - it is undesirable to print such for those who undertake to teach. A little pains-taking at home, will be amply repaid by enlarged power to instruct:-prepared printed questions are only for the youthful Teacher.

The Introductory Geographical Notices are for the Second Grade.

It will be easily seen that the works of eminent authors have been consulted, and their own words given in our Notes without acknowledgment; as, in many instances, it would be difficult to trace their origin.
