And we cannot e that he would exhort Men to do that which he infallibly was not poffible to be done by them. Further, it is fpoken of as fomething extraordinary, that though he had done so many Miefore them, yet they believed not on him.

Man's Heart may be faid to be hardned, when it has fuch a Stifnefs ftinacy as will yield to no Motives, nor Persuasions. Such a hardGod never infufes or puts into any Man's Heart: But God may be n another Sense to harden Men, without any impeachment of his e, Wisdom, and Goodnefs; namely, when he does that, which in n Nature has no tendency to harden them, but they notwithstandake Occafion from thence to harden themselves. Thus Pharaoh was ned by the Punishments inflicted upon him, and by the removal em too; thus fome, as the Apoftle fpeaks, Rom. 2.4, 5. were hardby the Goodness, Forbearance, and Long-fuffering of God, which fhould led them to Repentance; thus many in our Days harden themselves n, because they are not immediately punished for it: And we in common Way of Speaking fay, that fuch and fuch are ruined by Tenderness and Indulgence of their Parents, &c. And even fome become more hardened by the wife Reproofs given them to reclaim n: But this is their Fault, not the Fault of God, or of those who eavour to do them good. Accordingly St. Matthew, Chap. 13. 25. St. Paul, A&ts 28. 26, 27. afcribe this Blindnets and Hardnets to mfelves.

Here is no pofitive Act of God expreffed; but the eaning is, he left them to themfelves, and to thofe evil Spirits they fe to worship, and the Vices they fell into were the neceffary Effects their Idolatry.
