The Epiftle. St. James i. 1.

AMES, a fervant of God and of the Lord Jefus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect Galatia; Ifid de vita Sanct. And Eufebius exprefsly fays, that Philip the apoftle having preached the gospel at Hierapolis was crucified, and whilft he was faftened to the crofs, was killed by ftones thrown at him.-Eufeb. in Chron. The later writers fay, that the people of the place were worked up to this rage againft him for killing, by his prayers, a great ferpent which they worshipped. But this ftory feems to be fabulous, partly becaufe this matter of fact is not recorded in any good author, and was never heard of till many centuries after Chrift; and partly because it does not appear that the Phrygians were addicted to any fuch monftrous worship; they being infected by an idolatry of another kind.-Euseb. Præp. lib. ii. St. James] St. James, after our Saviour's refurrection, was conftituted bishop of Jerufalem, and feems to have prefided in the firft council held there, (Acts xv.) and to have directed the debates of the Apoftles concerning the Jewish ceremonies. There is mention made of him, and that too as the brother of Jefus Chrift, by Jofephus, who fays, he was delivered up to be ftoned by the cruelty of Ananus the high prieft, whofe death gave great diffatisfaction to the good people of the city.-Jof. Ant. lib. xx. cap. 8. There was an extraordinary opinion of his fanctity throughout all the city of Jerufalem where he lived; from whence he got the furname of the Juft. His martyrdom is recorded by the ecclefiaftical hiftorians after this manner:-The fcribes and Pharifees being impatient at the great growth of Christianity in Judea, were refolved to fet upon St. James, and by menaces force him to renounce that religion publicly before the people. And the better to do this, they hurry him up into a gallery of the Temple, and would oblige him to make a recantation before a multitude of people who were gathered together upon the rumour which was spread abroad concerning this matter. But inftead of denying Chrift, he made a public confeffion of him before that great affembly, who thereupon almost unanimously cried out, "Hofanna to the Son of David;" which fo enraged the unbelieving Jews, that they threw him down headlong from the high place which they had fet him on. But being not quite killed by his fall, he prayed to God for forgiveness to his murderers. However, this did but enrage his fpiteful perfecutors the more; and one of them being a fuller, and having in his hand a staff which he made use of in his trade to beat his cloth in the scouring, he ftruck him over the head therewith, and Lilled him outright.-Euseb. Hift. lib. ii. cap. 2.

The Collect This prayer for a true knowledge of Chrift was compoled in 1549, and improved in 1662. Before this time it ran thus: "As thou haft taught St. Philip and the other Apostles," &c. The introitus was pfalm cxxxiii.

St. Barnabas the Apoftle.

The Collect.

Lord God Almighty, who didft endue thy holy Apostle Barnabas with fingular gifts of the Holy Ghoft; Leave us not, we beseech thee, deftitute of thy manifold gifts, nor yet of grace to use them alway to thy honour and glory, through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epiftle. Acts xi. 22.

IDINGS of thefe things came unto the ears of the

church which was in Jerufalem; and they fent forth Barnabas, that he fhould go as far as Antioch: who when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpofe of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghoft and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord, Then departed Barnabas to Tarfus, for to feek Saul: and when he had found him, he brought him unto Antioch. And it came to pafs, that a whole year they affembled themselves with the church,

St. Barnabas] After the feparation of Paul and Barnabas, this latter Apoftle is faid to have fettled the gofpel in his native country of Cyprus; and failing from thence into Italy, to have planted Chriftianity in Milan, not being fuffered to come to Rome, by reafon of the edict of Claudius, which had prohibited all Jews to come into that city. He is the author of an epiftle which is full of pious inftructions, and very full of allegories, according to the way of writing ufed by the Jews. It was allowed for a genuine piece of St. Barnabas by fome of the beft critics among the ancient fathers, and who lived nigheft to the apoftolical times; by St. Clement of Alexandria, Strom. lib. i.; by Origen, lib. i. cont. Celf.; and by Tertulian de Pudic.

The Collect This prayer, for spiritual gifts and grace to apply them, was compofed in 1549. The introitus was pfalm cxlii.

and taught much people. And the difciples were called Christians first in Antioch. And in these days came prophets from Jerufalem unto Antioch. And there ftood up one of them named Agabus, and fignified by the Spirit, that there should be great dearth throughout all the world which came to pafs in the days of Claudius Cefar. Then the difciples, every man according to his ability, determined to fend relief unto the brethren which dwelled in Judea which also they did, and fent it to the elders by the hands of Barnabas and Saul.

The Gospel. St. John xv. 12.

THI
This I have loved you.
HIS is my commandment, that ye love one another,

as I have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatfoever I command you. Henceforth I call you not fervants; for the fervant knoweth not what his Lord doeth: but I have called you friends: for all things that I have heard of my Father, I have made known unto you. Ye have not chosen me, but I have chofen you, and ordained you, that ye fhould go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit fhould remain: that whatsoever ye fhall afk of the Father in my name, he may give it to you.

St. John Baptift's Day.
The Collect.

Lmighty God, by whofe providence thy fervant John Baptift was wonderfully born, and fent to prepare the way of thy Son our Saviour, by preaching of repentance; Make us fo to follow his doctrine and holy life, that we may truly repent according to his preaching; and after his example conftantly fpeak the truth, boldly rebuke vice, and patiently fuffer for the truth's fake; through Jefus Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. John This feftival was observed in the church from great antiquity, it being mentioned as fuch by Maximus Taurinenfis, who lived about A. D. 400. Our church formerly kept another holiday for the beheading of John the Baptift, viz. Auguft 29th.

The Collect This prayer, for grace to imitate the conduct of John the ift, was compofed in 1549. The introitus was pfalm cxliii.

The Epiftle. Ifaiah xl. 1.

Comfort ye, comfort ye, my people, faith your God.

Speak ye comfortably to Jerufalem, and cry unto her, That her warfare is accomplished; that her iniquity is pardoned: for the hath received of the Lord's hand double for all her fins. The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make ftraight in the defert a highway for our God. Every valley fhall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked thall be made ftraight, and the rough places plain. And the glory of the Lord fhall be revealed, and all flesh fhall fee it together; for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it. The voice faid, Cry. And he said, What fhall I cry? All flesh is grafs, and all the goodlinefs thereof is as the flower of the field. The grafs withereth, the flower fadeth, because the spirit of the Lord bloweth upon it: furely the people is grafs. The grafs withereth, the flower fadeth; but the word of our God fhall ftand for ever. O Zion, that bringeft good tidings, get thee up into the high mountain: O Jerufalem, that bringeft good tidings, lift up thy voice with ftrength; lift it up, be not afraid: fay unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God. Behold, the Lord God will come with ftrong hand, and his arm thall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. He fhall feed his flock like a fhepherd; he fhall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bofom, and shall gently lead those that are with young.
