Amend section 21 by striking out the words "to be used in the purchase and distribution of the Missouri Hand-book," in lines 5 and 6 of printed bill, and by inserting in lieu thereof the following: "Shall be used in the immediate purchase of not lessthan sixty thousand copies of the 'Hand-book of Missouri,' which shall be divided equally between, and distributed by the State Board of Immigration and the Missouri Immigration Society.

Your committee further report that they have considered, agreed to, and recommend that the following be adopted in lieu of Senate amendment No. 3, to wit:

Amend section (5) five, with subdivision of House bill, by striking out in lines fifty-three (53) and fifty-four (54), printed bill, the following, to wit: "fifty-five thousand dollars," and inserting in lieu thereof the words and figures, " eighty thousand dollars ($80,000).”

Your committee further report that they have considered, agreed to, and recommend that the following be adopted in lieu of Senate amendment No. 15, to wit:

Amend section twenty-six (26) of House bill, by striking out in line five (5), printed bill, the words and figures, "three hundred thousand dollars ($300,000)," and inserting in lieu thereof the words and figures," two hundred and fifty thousand dollars ($250,000).”

Your committee further report that they have considered, agreed to, and recommend that Senate amendments Nos. (9) nine, (16) sixteen and (17) seventeen be not adopted.

Your committee further report that they have considered, agreed to, and recommend the following amendment to section (10) ten, House bill No. 186:

Amend by striking out in lines sixteen (16), seventeen (17) and eighteen (18), section ten (10), printed bill, the following: "for the apprehension of criminals and suppression of outlawry, the sum of fifteen thousand dollars ($15,000)."

Senator Cottey moved to reconsider the vote by which the report was adopted, and to lay the motion to roconsider on the table; the latter motion prevailed.

The following message was received from the House of Representatives through Mr. Purdom, one of the clerks:

MR. PRESIDENT: I am instructed by the House to inform the Senate that there has been introduced into and passed the House, House bill No. 377, entitled "An act to repeal section 6661, chapter 145, article 1 the Revised Statutes of Missouri, in relation to assessment and collection of the revenue:"

Also, that the House has taken up House bill No. 333, entitled "An act to amend sections 285 and 986, article 10, chapter 22 of Revised Statutes of Missouri, entitled 'Costs in civil cases," and concurred in the following Senate amendments thereto : No. 1 Amend by striking out of said act the words and figures, "article ten (10):" No. 2. Amend title by striking out the words and figures, "article ten (10)."

On first reading of House bills,

House bill No. 377, entitled "An act to repeal section 6661, chapter 145, article 1 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri, in relation to assessment and collection of the revenue," was taken up and read first time.

House bill No. 497, entitled "An act to amend sections 5493, chapter 101 of the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri," was taken up and read first time.

House bill No. 593, entitled "An act to amend sections 6959 of chapter 147 of the Revised Statutes of the State of Missouri of 1879," was taken up and read first time.

House bill No. 734, entitled "An act regulating the levying of taxes upon real and personal property, including choses in action in cities containing more than thirty thousand and less than fifty thousand inhabitants," was taken up and read first time.

House bill No. 595 was taken up, and the amendment offered by Senator Bryant read first and second times and adopted.

Senator Walker offered the following substitute for the original amendment:

Amend by striking out section 2 and insert the following in lieu thereof:

Section 2. The State is hereby divided into thirty-four senatorial

districts, the members of the Senate to be elected as hereinafter designated, to wit:

The first district shall be composed of the counties of Nodaway, Atchison and Holt.

Second district-The counties of Buchanan and Andrew. Third district-The counties of Clinton, Clay, Platte and DeKalb. Fourth district-The counties of Gentry, Worth, Harrison and Daviess.

Fifth district-The counties of Livingston, Grundy, Mercer and Putnam.

Sixth district-The counties of Ray, Caldwell and Carroll. Seventh district-The counties of Randolph, Macon and Adair. Eighth district-The counties of Chariton, Linn and Sullivan. Ninth district-The counties of Boone, Cole, Miller and Osage. Tenth district-The counties of St. Charles, Warren, Montgomery and Callaway.

Eleventh district-The counties of Pike, Lincoln and Audrain. Twelfth district-The counties of Lewis, Clark, Knox, Scotland and Schuyler.

Thirteenth district-The counties of Marion, Shelby, Ralls and

Monroe.

Fourteenth district--The counties of Bates, Cass and Henry.
Fifteenth district--The county of Jackson.

Sixteenth district-The counties of Vernon, Barton and Jasper. Seventeenth district-The counties of Lafayette and Johnson. Eighteenth district-The counties of Newton, McDonald, Lawrence, Barry and Stone.

Nineteenth district--The counties of Saline, Pettis and Benton. The ayes and noes being demanded, the substitute was lost by the following vote:

Senator Cottey offered the following amendment:

Senator Bryant moved to reconsider the vote by which the bill passed, and to lay the motion to reconsider on the table; the latter motion prevailed.

Senator Bradley submitted the following report from the Committee on Enrolled Bills:

MR. PRESIDENT: Your Committee on enrolled Bills have carefully examined and find truly enrolled Senate joint and concurrent resolu

tion No. 4, entitled "Joint and concurrent resolution urging Congress to aid the construction of a ship railway across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec."

The president announced that all other business would be suspended, and directed the secretary to read at length Senate joint and concurrent resolution No. 4, entitled "Joint and concurrent resolution urging Congress to aid the construction of a ship railway across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec," and that unless objections be made he would sign the same to the end that it may become a law.

No objections being made said bill was read at length by the Secretary, and the presiding officer, in the presence of the Senate, in open session, no other business intervening, affixed his signature thereto. Said bill was immediately sent to the House of Representatives for the signature of the Speaker.

Senate joint and concurrent resolution No. 4, having been signed by the President of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, was this day presented to the Governor for his approval.

Senator Cottey offered the following resolution, which was read and adopted:

Resolved, That the House of Representaves be respectfully requested to return to the Senate, House bill No. 369.

Senator Bradley submitted the following reports from the Committee on Enrolled Bills, which were read:

PRESIDENT: Your Committee on Enrolled Bills have carefully examined and find truly enrolled Senate bill No. 84, entitled "An act to consolidate the permanent school fund and the seminary fund in certificates of indebtedness of the State bearing six per cent interest, and to provide for canceling the State bonds and certificates of indebtedness now held in trust for said funds."

MR. PRESIDENT: Your Committee on Enrolled Bill have carefully examined and find truly enrolled Senate bill No. 85, entitled "An act for the relief of the heirs of Alexander H. Henderson, and to appropriate money therefor."
