family altar, at the church meeting. And shall not God avenge his own elect, who cry night and day to him? We cannot neglect prayer for this great object without incurring guilt, and burying our talent in a napkin. For all these things, I will be inquired of by the house of Israel to do it for them. Earnest prayer leads to earnest effort; and whenever we possess the one grace, we are sure the other will follow. If we set a deep value on the salvation of one soul, and know that no spiritual change can ever be effected without the immediate and direct influence of the Spirit of God, we must then feel the deep importance attached to prayer as expressly required for the bestowment of so invaluable a blessing. If ye shall ask anything in my name, I will do it. The future glory of the church of Christ is intimately connected with the conversion of the Jews. Already the work has proceeded in an onward course amid difficulties and trials of a peculiar character. Nothing daunted or discouraged, however, by great obstacles, the Missionaries have proceeded in their high vocation, under the full assurance that the God of their fathers has acknowledged and blessed their labours. In this year's Report, there is much to call for deep and heartfelt gratitude to Him who wept over Jerusalem, and will surely gather the scattered tribes into his fold. Did Jesus weep over Jerusalem when he beheld the dire calamities which were about to overwhelm her in desolation and captivity? Ought we not to bear them on our hearts? to mourn over their present condition? to supplicate the Divine compassion on their behalf? to make mention of the fountain open for all uncleanness? and to unite our prayers, our sympathies, our services, for enlightening and bringing them to the knowledge of a crucified Saviour? We must work while it is called to-day. We know not what is before us. Our privileges are great, but we must use them, or they may be taken from us. We have no time to lose. Precious souls are perishing, and the church is not yet fully awake. All may do something, if they will only try. All have a talent com

mitted to their charge, for which they are accountable. Much may be accomplished by little beginnings, by determination and fixed resolve to surmount difficulties. With God's blessing, we may do great things. If we attempt much, we shall succeed. If we fold our hands, and leave to others the work, we lose the opportunity of serving our Divine Master according to his gracious command, to preach the gospel to every creature. If we can do what is within our reach, and do not fulfil our obligations, the sin will lie at our door. Wherein have we sacrificed for the Lord of Hosts? What is the amount of our subscriptions in proportion to our means of doing good to others? How does it happen that the funds of this Society only average between four and five thousand a year? Let us pray, and strive more for the increase. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of Hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. F. S. GERVIS.

Tiverton, October 18th, 1852.

THE DEPUTATION TO TUSCANY. IN our last number we announced this Deputation, and breathed forth our prayers to God for its success. It has now returned; and, though it has not seen the Grand Duke, it expresses a hope that, at no distant day, he may be disposed to remit the sentence of the poor Madiais. The deputation gives painful accounts of the religious persecutions now raging in Italy, against multitudes, in various parts, beginning to read the Scriptures, and to cast off the yoke of Rome! Though such intelligence should call forth the sympathies and prayers of the Christian church; it should, at the same time, awaken hope for the future. The earnest spirits, in Italy, now struggling into the light of heavenly truth, will prove the nucleus of a future Reformation; and the death of Martyrs even will be the seed of the church.
