in the days of our fathers, we would not have been
partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31 Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves, that ye
are the children of them which killed the prophets (r): 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers (). Ye 33 ferpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape
the damnation of hell? 34
Wherefore behold, I send unto you prophets, and wife men, and scribes; and some of them ye fhall kill and crucify, and some of them fhall ye
scourge in your fynagogues, and persecute them 35 from city to city : That upon you may come all
the righteous blood shed upon the earth, from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias,
son of Barachias, whom ye flew between the tem36 ple and the altar (t). Verily I say unto you, All these 37 things shall come upon this generation. O Jerusalem,
Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a
hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and 38 ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you 39 desolate. For I fay unto you, Ye shall not see me
henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord (u).

whole nation shall be ripe for destruction.
(1) Zacharias, who was slain in the outward court of the temple, is called the fon of Jehoiada. . Chron. xxiv. 20. but the two names have much the fame signification.
(u) Till ye shall be convinced, by the dreadful punishments in-. flicted on your nation, that I am the Messiab, whom you ought to have received with joy.
ND Jesus went out, and departed from the tem
ple; and his disciples came to him, for to thew 2 him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said
unto them, See ye not all these things ? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown
downi. 3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives (a), the
disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be ? and what shall be the
fign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take 5 heed that no man deceive you.
many in my name (6), saying I am Christ : and shall de6 ceive many.
shall hear of wars and rumours of wars : see that ye be not troubled : for all these
things must come to pass, but the end is not yet (c). 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom
against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and per8 tilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these 9 are the beginning of sorrows. Then shall they deliver
you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my namne's sake. 10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray II one another, and shall hate one another. And
many false prophets ihall rife, and shall deceive many. 12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of 13 many shall wax cold. But he that shall endure unto
(a). This chapter relates principally and more immediately to the destruction of Jerusalem ; which is described, however, in the most lofty terms, and by many circumstances suitable to the consummation of all things at the end of the world.
(6) Shall pretend to my authority, and take my title.
(c).The end and destruction of the Jewish staté : as it is likewise to be understood verses 13, 14.
14 the end, the fame shall be (d) faved. And this
gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the
world, for a witness unto all nations, and then shall 15 the end come. When
therefore shall see the abo. mination of (e) desolation, spoken of by Daniel the
prophet, standing in the holy place (whoso readeth, 16 let him understand) (f), Then let them which be in 17 Judea, flee into the mountains. Let him which is
on the house-top, not come down (g) to take any 18 thing out of his house : Neither let him which is 19 in the field, return back to take his clothes. And
wo unto them that are with child, and to them that 20 give fuck in those days. But pray ye that your
fight be not in the winter, neither on the fabbath21 day (h): For then shall be great tribulation, such as
was not since the beginning of the world to this 22 time, no, nor ever hall be. And except those
days fhould be thortened, there should no flesh
be saved: but for the elect's fake those days fall be 23 shortened (:). Then if any man ihail say unto you, 24. Lo, here is Chrift, or there : believe it not. For
there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and
(d) Shall escape, and be saved from the common destruction. Alts. ii. 21.
(e) The standards and enligns of the Roman army, in whiclı were statues of the heathen Gods, and of the C:fais.
(f) Our blessed Lord exhorts the people of his time to consider well the import of that passage of the Gospel, which foretells the pollution and destruction of the temple.
(3) Let no consideration whatever hinder his making haste to ele cape by the shortest way poflible;. that is, by the stairs on the outfide, by which they could go up to the roof, or down from it, without going through the house.
Chap. x. 27. Sce Mark ii. 4. (h) Journeying would be more difficult in the winter; and if on the sabbath-duy, miche provoke the superstitious Jews to hinder them.
(i) Fur inc fake oi le true believers, whù endure to the end, Ver. 13. the time shall be short;, otherwise none could escape. See Luke xxi. 18:
shall fhew great signs and wonders, insomuch that
(if it were poffible) they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore, if they 26 shall say unto you, Behold he is in the desert, go not
forth : behold, he is in the secret chambers, believe 27 it not.
For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west : so shall also the 28 coming of the Son of man be (k). For wherefoever
the carcafe is, there will the eagles (1) be gathered
together. 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days
shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven,
and the powers of the heavens shall be (m) shaken. 30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man
in heaven : and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they thall see the Son of man coming
in the clouds of heaven, with power and great glory. 31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a
trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect
from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the 32 other. Now learn a parable of the fig-tree: When
his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, 33 ye know that summer is nigh:
So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is 34 near, even at the doors.
Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be 35 fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my
words shall not pass away (n).
(A) See Luke xvii. 24. Note.
12) As you know by the resort of ravenous birds that a dead car. case is near the place, so you may judge by the approach of the Roman army (the standard of which was an eagle,) that the destrucsion of Jerusalem is near at hand.
(n) There shall be a general and great convulsion and disorder in the Jewish state. See this described in plain language Luke xxi. 23, 24.
(n) Sce Luke xxi. 32. Note.
But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only. 37 But as the days of Noe were, so shall also the com38 ing of the Son of man be. For as in the days that
were before the flood, they were eating and drink
ing, marrying and giving in marriage, until the 39 day that Noe entered into the ark, And knew
not until the food came and took them all away;
so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 40 Then shall two be in the field, the one shall be 41 taken, and the other left. Two women shall be
grinding at the mill, the one shall be taken, and the
other left. 42
Watch therefore, for ye know not what hour 43 your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the
good man of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched,
and would not have suffered his house to be broken 44 up. Therefore be ye also ready : for in such an
hour as you think not, the Son of man cometh. 45 Who then is a faithful and wife fervant, whom his
Lord hath made ruler over his houshold, to give 46 them meat in due season? Blessed is that servant,
whom his Lord when he cometh, fhall find so 47 doing. Verily I say unto you, that he shall make 48 him ruler over all his goods. But and if that evil
servant shall say in his heart, My Lord delayeth his 49 coming, And shall begin to smite his fellow-fer
vants, and to eat and drink with the drunken: 50 The Lord of that fervant Thall come in a day
when he looketh not for him, and in an hour that 51 he is not aware of; And shall cut him asunder (0),
and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
(0) And shall cut him off from serving in his presence, and fend him to be punished, as all wicked and unfaithful servants shall be, in a place of misery and torment.
