SAINT MARC. La figure de cet évangéliste a été faite pour décorer l'église de Saint-Marc à Venise. Destinée à être vue de loin, elle perd maintenant une grande partie de son effet en se trouvant dans une galerie; cependant la composition est si grandiose, que sa vue produit une impression semblable à celle qu'on éprouve en voyant le Père Éternel débrouillant le chaos, peint par Raphaël dans les loges du Vatican, ou la figure de Charlemagne, peinte par M. Gros dans la coupole de Sainte-Geneviève à Paris. Saint Marc assis est drapé d'une manière large, qui cependant laisse apercevoir le nu avec la plus exacte vérité; mais la couleur est trop uniforme et d'un ton trop rouge. Le peintre de ce tableau se nomme Barthélemy della Porta, mais, religieux de l'ordre de Saint-Dominique, il est plus connu sous son nom de religion Fra-Bartholomeo. Il naquit à Florence en 1469, et mourut en 1517. Ce tableau a été gravé dans la Galerie de Florence par P. G. Langlois. Haut., 10 pieds; larg., 6 pieds 7 pouces. The figure of this evangelist was painted for the church of Saint-Mark at Venice, destined to be seen from a distance, it now loses a great part of its effect by being placed in a gallery, nevertheless its composition is so sublime, that it creates the same impression, as that which we feel in seeing the Eternal reducing chaos to order, painted by Raphael in the gallery of the Vatican, or the figure of Charlemagne, painted by M. Gros in the cupola of Saint-Genevieve at Paris. Saint Mark is sitting, the drapery is painted in a grand style, which however discloses, nudity of the most exact truth; but there is too much uniformity of colouring and the tone is too red. The painter of this picture is called Barthelemy della Porta; but having been a monk of the order of Saint-Dominic, he is better known by his religious name Fra-Bartholomeo. He was born at Florence in 1469, and died in 1517. This picture was engraved in the Florence gallery by P. G. Langlois. Height, 10 feet 7 inches; breadth, 6 feet 11 inches. |
