THE IMMUTABILITY OF GOD.

I

THROUGH endless years thou art the same,
O thou eternal GOD!
Ages to come shall know thy name,
And tell thy works abroad.

[ocr errors]

The strong foundations of the earth
Of old by thee were laid;

By thee the beauteous arch of heav'n
With matchless skill was made.

III

Soon shall this goodly frame of things,
Form'd by thy pow'rful hand,
Be, like a vesture, laid aside,
And chang'd at thy command.

IV

But thy perfections, all divine,
Eternal as thy days,

Through everlasting ages shine,
With undiminish'd rays.

[ocr errors]

Thy servants' children, still thy care,
Shall own their fathers' GOD;

To latest times thy favour share,
And spread thy praise abroad.

THE GOODNESS OF GOD.

I

DEAR is the mem'ry of thy love,
O GOD! Our heav'nly king;
Let age to age thy righteousness
in songs of triumph sing.

II

Thou reign'st on high, but not confin'st
Thy goodness to the skies;

Thro' the whole earth thy bounty shines,
And ev'ry want supplies.

III

Their suppli'nt eyes thy creatures raise
To thee, for daily food;

Thy hand the wish'd-for food conveys,
And all are blest with good.

IV

How kind are thy compassions, LORD!
How slow thine anger moves!
But swiftly flies thy pard'ning word
To cheer the soul thou lov'st.

V

All nature, through its boundless space,
Utters a grateful voice;

But those who taste thy greater love
In highest strains rejoice.

THE DAILY GOODNESS OF GOD.

I

GREAT GOD! how endless is thy love!
Thy gifts are ev'ry morning new;
And daily mercies from above
Gently distil, like early dew.

II

Thou spreadst the curtains of the night, Great guardian of our sleeping hours! Thy sov'reign word restores the light, And quickens all our drowsy pow'rs.

III

We yield our pow'rs to thy command; To thee we consecrate our days: Perpetual blessings from thine hand Demand perpetual songs of praise.

THE UNBOUNDED GOODNESS OF GOD.

I

GIVE to our GOD immortal praise;
Mercy and truth are all his ways;
Abounding love to GOD belongs;
Repeat his mercies in our songs!

II

He built the earth, he spread the sky,
And fix'd the starry lights on high:
He gave the sun his morning light;
He bade the moon direct the night.

ITI

Messiah came with pow'r to save
From guilt, and darkness, and the grave:
Abounding love to GOD belongs;
Repeat his mercies in our songs!

IV

Through this vain world he guides our feet, And leads us to his heav'nly seat;

His mercies ever shall endure,

When this vain world shall be no more.

THE DISTINGUISHED GOODNESS OF GOD TO MAN.

THY wisdom, pow'r and goodness, LORD!
In all thy works appear;

But most thy praise shall man record,
Man, thy distinguish'd care.

II

From thee the breath of life he drew,
That breath thy power maintains;
Thy tender mercy, ever new,
His brittle frame sustains.

III

Thy providence, his constant guard
When threat'ning ills impend,
Or will th' impending dangers ward,
Or timely succours lend.

IV

Yet nobler favours claim his praise,
Of reason's light possest;
By revelation's brighter rays
Still more divinely blest.

V

All-bounteous LORD! thy mind impart :
O! teach me to improve
Thy gifts with ever grateful heart,
And crown them with thy love.
