EDITOR'S PREFACE.

THE name of Dr. Alexander is already well known to the British public, in consequence of his distinguished work entitled, "Brief Outline of the Evidences of the Christian Religion," which has been published in two or three distinct forms, both in Scotland and England. It is impossible for any competent judge to read that acute and masterly performance without feeling that Dr. Alexander is one of those eminent men who are destined to extend and perpetuate the literary and theological fame of the New World. He is one of a race of divines who, within the last thirty or forty years, have done much towards elevating the philological character of the United States to an almost equal rank with that of the parent country.
